Is it too soon for a September 2017 reception support thread?

Anybody about to embark on school applications and want to chat? I don't know about anyone else but I think I'll need a place to get advice / support over the next year!

DS will be 4 in January and I think will be very ready for school come September. Our catchment school is single form entry and very over-subscribed but we live quite close so fingers crossed we'll get in!

First school tours next week, quite looking forward to it!

First choice in a very over subscribed London school!! Now to negotiate with head teacher about delayed entry into Reception.

roses2 · 18/04/2017 17:28

Fourth choice in London :(

Thank Tiggy. We want them to start in September 2018 so delay a whole year (they will turn 5 in mid August 2018). We have already included letters to the Local Authority with our application and they said that they will review the position with the head teacher of the school after admissions day.

Stealthtoast · 18/04/2017 17:49

Third choice, in London - though really second choice as we knew the second was very unlikely. I really want to know where we are on the waiting list for the first one!

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 18/04/2017 17:52

I thought if you wanted to delay by a year you would have to apply next year?

Loraline · 18/04/2017 17:55

First choice in Central London for is. Woo hoo!

WhiteHartLane · 18/04/2017 17:56

1st choice here too. Would like some advice please (sorry to hijack thread) My DS is a July born and currently attends pre-school (not connected to infants) 4 mornings a week. I am concerned about him attending a full 6 hour day/5 day week and initially wanted him to start Reception in Jan 2018. His pre-school have told me that they feel this would hold him back socially (he has a speech disorder) and have advised me to ask the school if he can do a shorter week instead. Has anyone had any experience of this and do the school have to agree?

Whatsitgoingtobe · 18/04/2017 18:05

We didn't get any of our choices and allocated a school I'd never heard to in the next town. Absolutely gutted. Catchments in our town were less than 250m in places and we are in the black spot. Feeling shit.

CountessOfStrathearn · 18/04/2017 18:13

whitehart, I send my NT August born DS to school mornings only for the first term and school was fine with that.

WhiteHartLane · 18/04/2017 18:35

Thanks for your reply Countess, I am hoping to send DS Tuesday-Friday until next Jan.

BellaGoth · 18/04/2017 18:44

We got our 1st choice. I was so shocked I had to get someone to double check! Think it's taken a while to sink in! Smile

BellaGoth · 21/04/2017 07:17

How is everyone now the dust has settled a bit?

No have you been able to make any progress?

Morning. We've already had a letter from the school inviting us for a parents' induction meeting in May. I wasn't expecting anything so quickly!

BellaGoth · 21/04/2017 10:24

Crikey Alex that's quick! I'm hoping we'll get more information quickly as DS isn't great with changes, and the more he knows the happier he is.

We've not heard anything from the school yet but I think they are still on school holidays this week. I'm planning on contacting them next week to ask about start dates so I can book the days off work, and I want to get her booked into the after school club.

tinypop4 · 21/04/2017 13:21

We had a letter from the school posted on Wednesday inviting us for a new parents meeting in June and to remind us to fill in the form to accept the place.

Alex83 · 21/04/2017 13:30

I know! We received it yesterday along with some forms to fill out. DD is really excited to start school, lots of her little friends at nursery have got the same school so the familiar faces should help with the transition hopefully.

I think dd will be the only one from her nursery, but she makes friends easily and I think she'll be fine.

BellaGoth · 22/04/2017 08:04

Apparently about half of the intake will come from DS' nursery. It's a single firm intake so they'll all be in the same class.

It's a bit of a mixed blessing really, DS isn't very popular at nursery so a fresh start might have done him some good.

There are 4 from DCs preschool going including her. But also tons of other younger siblings who she already knows. Suspect it will be quite a confident class!

stresshead84 · 22/04/2017 11:25

My son goes to nursery miles away due to my work situation, so he won't know anyone in his class. Next door neighbour is in year above so will be nice for him to have someone he knows there.

RatOnnaStick · 22/04/2017 16:36

Ds's preschool is attached to another school so nobody else will be going with him but at least 3 of his new class are younger siblings of ds1's class so he does know a few children.

My experience is that it really doesn't matter, friendships are so fluid at this age that whether they know everyone or no-one at the start, they all find their way just the same. By the end of the first week they will be forging and changing new alliances without thought for those they left behind.
