Or at least they would be labelled as such if they were a year younger.

This time next year, those who don't meet the expected level in their KS2 SATs will be forced to resit them in December of Y7 (and, I believe, again in June if they still don't pass).

Today's figures are:

53% of pupils met the new expected standard in reading, writing and mathematics
66% of pupils met the new expected standard in reading
70% of pupils met the new expected standard in mathematics
72% of pupils met the new expected standard in grammar, punctuation and spelling
74% of pupils met the new expected standard in writing

That's an awful lot of kids whose transition to secondary school will be blighted by the expectation of lunch/tutor/after school intervention and possibly summer school.

Poor, poor kids.

My Ds really felt the pressure, despite me emphasising that it was to measure the school. In fact the school itself was relatively laid back compared to some of the horror stories you hear. If he was in this situation it would have pushed him over the edge. His self esteem would never recover.

The mental health problems a lot of our kids will be having in the future, is really worrying.

EverythingWillBeFine · 08/07/2016 12:21

We've had the results.
Dc2 passed everything (much to my surprise) but he said a to of other children had one area that didn't meet expectations.
he was think he was really relieved and that it played on his mind a lot (even though he never mentioned it). The change in his behaviour, incl how happy and smiley he is now, shows how much he was frightened by these results.
That's symptomatic isn't it?

Callmegeoff · 08/07/2016 16:32

I've Just had dd2s results she passed everything, a huge achievement given her dyslexia and massive improvement from her key stage 1 sats which put her at level 1.

She has really not enjoyed year 6. :(

ParadiseCity · 08/07/2016 16:39

I'm already seeing FB posts from parents so proud of their kids for passing their SATs. Erm, tact and diplomacy out of the window then?!
Surely MN or somewhere else anonymous is better for talking about results than fecking Facebook...

TeenAndTween · 08/07/2016 16:42

My DD is in the 47% as I anticipated; however I am delighted by her results and her progress this year.

I'm a secondary English teacher. Our school like to keep our dept slightly overstaffed, which is mostly possible because most of us work part time (either fewer days or across departments).

I was told yesterday that I've got several periods of 'yr7 intervention' on my timetable for next year, which I'm assuming is to do with this issue. I think there are six groups; if we have 47%, we'll have 120 students to tutor - 20 to a class doesn't sound like tutoring to me Hmm

Rhythmsticks · 08/07/2016 17:39

The current year 5's will have had 2 years to cover the new curriculum though, so they should get better marks than this year's cohort?

I think the "expected standard" on the old curriculum was set quite low so in some ways I like that expectations are higher with the new curriculum. I am not keen on the focus on grammar that in all likelihood they will never use again but apart from that I think that the standards set are right for 11yo's.

noblegiraffe · 08/07/2016 17:58

Usually when pass rates increase because e.g. They have more time to cover the new curriculum, people moan about exams getting easier and 'grade inflation' Wink

TeenAndTween · 08/07/2016 18:37

Hrafnkel You won't have quite 47%, as that includes people who reached expected in the English elements but didn't reach expected in maths.

noble But in this case, I think the extra time on the SPaG at least will help next years y6. (Not convinced it will make much difference to the maths and reading though.)

Yet writing is still poor.

That depends on what you mean by poor I suppose.

Do you mean using a wide range of grammatical structures and punctuation (mainly what the new standard is about)
or
Do you mean writing that engages the reader (which doesn't seem to be assessed).

I think I read on MN somewhere that the Harry Potter books wouldn't meet the expected standard ...

I just thank God mine have all left school!!!!

FusionChefGeoff · 10/07/2016 08:47

This makes me so frightened for DS who's just turned 4 and starting YR in September. I try so hard to build his self esteem and let him know how awesome I think he is - and the thought that it will all be smashed apart by this insane system really depresses me.

We don't get the results till Friday when we get the reports. Can you see them earlier?

Most secondaries use CAT tests around here, as well as the SATs so not too bothered.

Jackpack · 12/07/2016 16:59

This time last year (and all other years) my Ds was above average in almost everything. We got his results today and he has got expected for everything but below expected for numeracy, which he isn't happy with. He's not this over confident snooty kid that thinks he has to be the best at everything but he works hard and to see his results drop so much, even after me explaining about the changes to the curriculum, well he's a bit upset.

bojorojo · 12/07/2016 23:00

His results may not have dropped much. Are you comparing like with like? He may also have had a score of 99 in maths. The current y6 will have had the shortest time of any cohort that takes the new Sats. It is not surprising some have not done as well as they would have done on the previous curriculum. I am sure many schools have much lower results than last year, especially the moderated results vs unmoderated results. This may well show large differences between schools that are not really there and the league tables will be misunderstood by parents.

goingmadinthecountry · 13/07/2016 06:47

Seeing exactly how the marking worked for writing this year, teachers will teach much more to the test - tick box exercises for semi-colons, ellipses, hyphens etc and prompt sheets giving sentence openers to use (straight to recycling of course so they can pretend the children did it without scaffolding. Fronted adverbial, anyone?

It's an utter farce and quite depressing. If my dyslexic son was still at school, I'd certainly be causing a fuss through the Disability Discrimination Act.

Feenie · 13/07/2016 06:54

Apart from word banks, etc, are permitted in the new curriculum and can be on display or on tables instead of in the bin. Smile

goingmadinthecountry · 13/07/2016 07:28

I know, just feeling grumpy after moderation which was basically a big tick box exercise.

CandODad · 13/07/2016 07:37

The writing moderation I saw was basically if it didn't have all punctuation at some point then the child missed out.

Badbadbunny · 13/07/2016 11:51

Do you think the same negative views of people posting about their kids being selected for the footie team, or winning a gymnastics medal, or getting a medal at a swimming gala. What about the feelings of all the kids who aren't sporty? How you do think they feel when they see other kids getting that kind of recognition. It's just the same!
