tutors paying more to find one than to hire one !!!!

I am looking for a tutor for my 6 year old and I would have to pay out more to find one on a website than to hire one for a few sessions. is there anywhere you can find a tutor that wont charge me to contact them ?

I have to ask why on earth you want a tutor for a 6 year old?

But if you don't want to pay a fee, you will have to go on word of mouth. Most decent tutors are not with agencies anyway, and get all their work by recommendation IME.

The Tutor Pages don't charge parents, but they charge tutors an annual fee instead!
If you mean Tutorhunt you do pay a charge for contact details, but there is a messaging system that you can use to send enquiries to tutors and you don't have to pay until you have decided a tutor is the right one for you.

I'm a tutor - but I'd not dream of joining an agency. A decent tutor will be a busy tutor. They won't need to pay an agency to find clients as word of mouth is generally the way things work.
If a tutor is new to the area, perhaps they'd engage with a tutor - but I'd recommend you find someone who has been in situ for a while so that you can be sure that they are familiar with the exams and assessments of the school's your DC.

My friend tutors in the UK. She's an ex teacher and has never advertised, she started off doing a favour for one of her ex pupils and from there on parents contacted her. I would ask around and see if anyone has recommendations.

No idea why on earth a six year old would need a tutor, but that's a separate issue!

Ask other parents, or the school. Word of mouth is the best way to find someone.

I use TutorHunt and it works well for me. I teach in a primary school near my home and do not want to tutor pupils there, so the site has been a good way of finding some extra work from parents I would not normally encounter. I don't know how much they charge the parents for my details though, although it is nice to be able to withhold them if I do not want to or am unable to work with a child.

Dm, who tutors, reckons agencies are one of the biggest scams around. She used a couple at one point, when she wanted to increase the amount she did and was horrified at the amount they charged. One was charging £20 per lesson.
All they did was take her name, add it to a list of tutors and send it to a person who had to phone up people on the list and sort it out. The agency made no attempt to check her qualification, ability to teach or even crb

She's refused to use them since and she always has way more people asking than she can fit in.

Agencies are a con, but sites like tutorhunt and firsttutora have worked for me in the past. Although, I've been completely reliant on word of mouth for a while. (Some from initial tutorhunt contacts)
I thought the messaging system was great as we could chat abailabilty and style etc and only once the first session was agreed did the parent have to pay. I usually offer a reduced rate initial session/assessment anyway, to make sure the child will benefit and the relationship will work, so I always felt that balanced it out a bit!

Tutoring agencies here (in London) take an average 50% commission so professional, good, long term tutors will avoid them if at all possible! Whereabouts are you based? Linked in can be a good place to try.

Also, with some of these website I think parents get peace of mind, as I have had to submit qualifications and DBS check before being "active"!

thank you all for your help I have found one now and because you all asked my 6 year old needs help with drawing her letters, she will not work with me so I put the idea to her that I get her a teacher who will work with just her and she loves this idea. she has had speech issues so has little confidence but that has improved but her work has suffered and now does not like to write as she cannot form the letters correctly .
