SATS support thread for parents

As yr6 SATS start tomorrow, I thought it might be a good idea to start a support thread for parents to say how their DC are finding them.

DS has had a very chilled day due to the lovely weather: loads of water fights and he walked to the corner shop with his younger sister for the first time (with no adult) and loads of ice cream etc.

He went to bed very chilled but am sure the nerves will kick in in the morning!!

DS said both papers were fine. Maths is his strongest area though and he enjoys it because there is less to read.

Peacefully8484 · 11/05/2016 18:17

My DD found the maths hard. She was ok with the reading and SPaG but not at all happy with the maths and feels like she really messed up.. Is the second reasoning supposed to be bit easier?!! Hope so as have a very despondent girl here...

After a tough reading test and an okay SPAG test yesterday, DD came out of school and said the maths test today was easy peasy (her words).

Reading was always her strength and she never really got maths til year 5 but has flourished in the subject since then. So I'm glad she wasn't stressed out about it, she seems to be taking it all in her stride.

Bless her Daily Sad. Is she tired? Going over and over stuff in her head and getting it jumbled up? DS couldn't recall any of the reading paper at all. Some of it started to come back to him and some of the text sounds very odd.

DS is tired. I think a lot of that is to do with the whole 'SATs Week' thing. I just keep reminding myself that when children do GCSE'/A'levels they do their exam and then go home. These Year 6's are expected to do an 'exam' or two and then carry on with a full on day. I think they are all doing really well.

BetweenTwoLungs · 11/05/2016 20:05

Pretty sure it's not the case that paper 3 is harder - both have a mix of easier and harder questions. It's completely random. In fact, in the sample papers, paper 3 is much easier than paper 2.

I'm a year 6 teacher and my class are exhausted. So am I!

oktimetodoit · 11/05/2016 20:05

I take it a reader is assisting dc with the questions? That must be off putting when it should be quiet. My ds seems quite chilled tbh. I however can't wait until the weekend.

exLtEveDallas · 11/05/2016 20:28

Hi all. DD went out after school today so I've only just talked to her. She said that the maths papers were "OK" but that there were two questions that they hadn't even been taught how to do and a percentage question that confused her. She said she found the reasoning paper harder but at least she finished it.

I've had a long chat with her about 'level 6 questions' etc and she seems to understand and feel happier. I've drummed into her that she can't be expected to answer every question, especially if they are above her level, and think it has sunk in.

I am so glad this will be all over tomorrow; I want my DD back. I don't like this pale and despondent imitation in my home any more. Fuck SATS.

oktimetodoit · 11/05/2016 20:33

ds just said there were no percentages questions on his Confused maybe he missed that one out.

PonderingProsecco · 11/05/2016 20:36

My son said confused by a percentage question as well.....
He has told me to back off re fusspotting about noise in his room due to readers.
Says he is fine......
Did say reader at his table quietened down when he caught her eye during SPAG.
Err- not looking at his paper then!!
Roll on Friday and school trip out......

HemanOrSheRa · 11/05/2016 20:38

DS has just said there were a couple of percentage questions on one paper and definitely one on another which he knows he got wrong as it was confusing. But realised as soon as the test was over.

Mandzi34 · 11/05/2016 20:43

My DS mentioned a thermometer question which had people confused and a question about jam!

ineedaholidaynow · 11/05/2016 20:46

DS liked the jam one, but probably on the basis he likes jam Grin

HemanOrSheRa · 11/05/2016 20:49

Hehe! Yes, DS has just said there was thermometer question and a jam question Grin.

Mandzi34 · 11/05/2016 20:51

Funny how they refer to the questions :)

oktimetodoit · 11/05/2016 20:58

OK ds remember the thermometer and jam questions Grin. He missed out the first but answered the jammie one haha.

PeaceLoveGonk · 11/05/2016 21:02

They will be used to working with the noise of chatter during normal lessons. Only really special snowflakes will be bothered by readers.

PonderingProsecco · 11/05/2016 21:03

Listening to my ds, he is not the special snowflake- but maybe I am!!!!!

simpson · 11/05/2016 21:25

PP - that means thatI am too!

When talking to DS about the noise of the kids with readers putting him off he told me to "get a grip mum!"

DS had no problems today and said he enjoyed it

oktimetodoit · 11/05/2016 21:37

Yeah....the more I think about it I would be a special snowflake too! Grin. Ds looked a bit miffed when I asked about a reader so I'm guessing there either aren't any or they are in different rooms. Hmm
