SATS support thread for parents

As yr6 SATS start tomorrow, I thought it might be a good idea to start a support thread for parents to say how their DC are finding them.

DS has had a very chilled day due to the lovely weather: loads of water fights and he walked to the corner shop with his younger sister for the first time (with no adult) and loads of ice cream etc.

He went to bed very chilled but am sure the nerves will kick in in the morning!!

Poor children. This government really are bastards.

hudyerwheesht · 09/05/2016 14:24

God ok I hope my DS isn't told things like that.

DS was ok with previous SATS, just seems to be these ones they've ramped up the pressure..Sad

PeaceLoveGonk · 09/05/2016 14:25

Will we be able to see the SATs material?

littlenicky61 · 09/05/2016 14:28

Thing is the government create the thresholds after the children have taken the test so they can manipulate the results to show whatever they want - low threshold = higher achievement = what clever government we are and look how we have pushed standards up

high threshold = lower achievement = look how schools are failing = all schools must be turned into academies

poor children poor teachers - our education system is screwed .

Would love all parents to pull kids out for tomorrows and all the other sats . Teachers predicting more of the same tomorrow in the spag .

ineedaholidaynow · 09/05/2016 14:28

I assume not for a few weeks as my understanding is that children can sit them next week if they miss them this week

BaboonBottom · 09/05/2016 14:29

What happens if you keep them home?

Not allowed to discuss content until a week after the test, so next Monday/Tuesday possibly?

Will ask DD when she gets home what the texts were. Not that she will want to talk about it I should imagine. We won't be able to name texts on here obviously

CPtart · 09/05/2016 14:33

Can't wait to pick up DS2 today and give him a big hug. He is just as bright (if not more so in maths) than his brother 2 years older. I just feel this new format won't do many children justice at all!

Janefromdowntheroad · 09/05/2016 14:33

Yes yes yes re unrealistic expectations.

They will still have your do it I believe, when they return.

drivinmecrazy · 09/05/2016 14:39

I'm all for supporting our schools, but if my child comes home in anyway distressed today then i will seriously be re-considering whether I send her into school tomorrow. How dare they put our kids through this.
DD2 has worked her socks off but it would seem that any preparation has all been in vain if this paper is anything to go by. She would have struggled to get a 4B/4A in last years paper. I only hope her sunny disposition has kept her going today.
What a crock of s**t!!!
And her poor teacher! I cannot imagine what he must be thinking this afternoon Sad Sad Sad

Janefromdowntheroad · 09/05/2016 14:41

Its like that awful dream where you're sitting an important exam and you suddenly realise you don't know any of the answers. But in real life. FOR 10 YEAR OLDS.

One of the teachers on TES said she and her head teacher couldn't agree on the answer for one of the questions

Lilliana · 09/05/2016 14:42

All kept secret until the 20th I think as that's the last date they can be sat. I did it with my year 6's this morning and it was hard. Less than half finished and lots missed out questions. They tried hard and no one got upset but I'm not optimistic about the results. If this was last years test/levels they would have done really well.

Yes if you keep them off they do it next week, hence the embargo on talking about test content.

What if you just withdraw permission? Refuse to let your child do them but send them to school anyway? Tell your child to put a huge cross through each question?

Not fair on her teachers though

Janefromdowntheroad · 09/05/2016 14:43

Less than half finished?

How many finished the sample test if you don't mind me asking?

If you keep them home they can re sit it as long as they haven't been in contact with anyone who has taken the test or found out about it online - social media etc. Not sure how they monitor this criteria.

Most finished the previous papers we have done with all but one or two achieving at least level 4 Not sure on the sample as their other teacher did that with them and I can't remember off the top of my head.

Janefromdowntheroad · 09/05/2016 14:48

DD has an after school club so won't see her until 4.15. Will be interesting to see the others come out though.

I presumed they would be doing something fun this afternoon but DD said they were practising SPAG

Mandzi34 · 09/05/2016 14:49

Poor kids! My DS will be distraught as this is his hardest paper. Although I fully expect the others to be difficult now if this sets the bar.

OrangesandLemonsNow · 09/05/2016 14:57

Waiting for DSS and DSD to come out now.

The school have handled it really well and they had a lovely letter sent home from their class teacher last week.

They are doing 'fun things' in the afternoon.

Dreading how they will be though now after hearing this Sad
