SATS support thread for parents

As yr6 SATS start tomorrow, I thought it might be a good idea to start a support thread for parents to say how their DC are finding them.

DS has had a very chilled day due to the lovely weather: loads of water fights and he walked to the corner shop with his younger sister for the first time (with no adult) and loads of ice cream etc.

He went to bed very chilled but am sure the nerves will kick in in the morning!!

www.theguardian.com/education/2016/may/10/fresh-humiliation-as-sats-answers-published-online-for-second-time? I don't know if this link worked but haveyou all see the article in guardian saying that today's Spag and spelling test leaked!! Do you think they will cancel today's as well?!! Hope so!!!!

PeaceLoveGonk · 10/05/2016 07:17

I'd be furious if any SATs test were cancelled. DDs education has been put on hold for the past year whilst they've had SPAG drilled into them and done endless maths and comprehension tests. I want the results to show what an utter waste of time this has been and hope it will be changed for next years Yr 6.

Janefromdowntheroad · 10/05/2016 07:22

Really really hope so. Answers were published on a password protected site though so I doubt it.

HPFA · 10/05/2016 07:27

I have Year 7 DD and today she said "The Year 6s will be doing SATS today". I asked her if she was glad not to be doing them and she said "Definitely!!"
Funnily enough she's a late August birthday and I'd always thought that was a disadvantage but reading all the posts makes me think something good has come out of it.

Best of luck to everyone

simpson · 10/05/2016 07:31

Feel so Sad for any 10/11 yr olds who feel like they have "failed" Sad

I too would be cross if today's SPAG was cancelled (even though DS loathes it) - all that pressure/practise for nothing?

DS is still asleep Shock he usually wakes early (6.45) every morning...

So if some schools/parents had access to the answers you think that's fair?
Absolute shambles!

It was only avaliable apparently on a password protected site only accessible by markers so don't know how far it will have 'spread'

OrangesandLemonsNow · 10/05/2016 07:48

I very much doubt they will cancel it at this late stage tbh.

Some schools will be starting them in an hour or so.

Brokenbiscuit · 10/05/2016 07:58

ShockThe papers have been leaked?

FFS! What a mess!

I don't honestly see how they can go ahead with the test if that's really happened, but I'm saying nothing to dd. The words piss-up and brewery come to mind...

rainbowstardrops · 10/05/2016 08:14

My DD finds academic stuff quite challenging and found the reading test very hard.
She didn't finish it but couldn't tell me if she left one question, a few, or lots Sad
She's come on so well at school but these Sats are just demoralising her. I'm so cross! Angry

OrangesandLemonsNow · 10/05/2016 08:26

I don't honestly see how they can go ahead with the test if that's really happened, but I'm saying nothing to dd

They have said on the news that they will go ahead. Whether they disguard the marks from SPAG later we will have to see.

Too late to stop them. My DSC school will be starting them very soon.

rainbowstardrops · 10/05/2016 08:28

I've just waved off my nervous bundle of loveliness for her Sats breakfast at school.
She knows she struggled yesterday and is now dreading today and dreading the maths even more.
All this pressure seems so crazy while they're still so young. My DD said they hardly realise they're regularly doing assessments at the end of each term, so why all the big deal crap about Sats?! Grrrr! Angry

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/05/2016 08:30

I know its early but what the heck, I've been reading how nasty yesterdays paper was and after today's fiasco you all deserve it.

HemanOrSheRa · 10/05/2016 08:37

I didn't say anything to DS about the leaked papers. Although I was reading the news stories like this Shock and Angry while he was eating his breakfast. He's not looking forward to the spelling paper at all.

If you could pass through with the Wine at about 3.30pm OYBBK, that would be great!

OrangesandLemonsNow · 10/05/2016 08:37

I did speak to some colleagues last night (I am a teacher but on mat leave) who agree with the views of other teachers that have been said on this and other threads.

My schooldays didn't have any children in tears but there were some that were expected to finish that didn't.

DSC were okilled this morning. We had a fun family evening and will do the same this evening.

Two days left after today..

OrangesandLemonsNow · 10/05/2016 08:37

*OK not okilled Blush

rainbowstardrops · 10/05/2016 08:41

Thanks for the wine badkitten! I bloody need it but I'll pop it in the fridge until 3.30pm when DD comes home and tells me how hard today's tests were. I'll really need it then!
It's all just so soul destroying Sad

Brokenbiscuit · 10/05/2016 08:46

Thanks for the wine!

I feel bad for the teachers too. So much work and then some idiot goes and publishes the papers online. You couldn't make it up!

I'm glad that dd and her friends don't seem unduly stressed but feel really bad for those kids who were upset yesterday. Hope that things go better for them all today!

ParadiseCity · 10/05/2016 08:49

What a bloody joke.

I've told DS the paper has been leaked but only for a short time and you needed a password to see it anyway. I didn't want him going into school and hearing an elaborate playground version of the news.

Fucks sake. He has been chilled etc but I still found him googling prefixes this morning. He's 11 he should be googling minecraft!!!

Brokenbiscuit · 10/05/2016 08:53

Paradise, my dd was revising the difference between transitive and intransitive verbs this morning! Grin

I don't object to them learning proper grammar at all, but I feel that the current year 6 kids have had to squeeze too much into too short space of time. Also, I don't think the new tests are very good at testing whether the kids can actually use the grammar appropriately, which is surely the whole point...

exLtEveDallas · 10/05/2016 08:54

DD had a bad nights sleep and still seems very down this morning. Her meltdown in the test must have been pretty bad - I've had two parents come up to me this morning and ask after her - both having been told about it by their DC. One mum said "DS was really worried about EveDD yesterday, he wanted me to text you to see how she was" which is sweet but very sad - 10 year olds shouldn't be worrying like this.

One kid has definately been pulled from the rest of the week - and he is one of the brighter ones.

I feel so helpless - nothing I can do to make DD feel better. She is usually such a 'sparky' child. Horrible seeing her so demoralised Sad

Brokenbiscuit · 10/05/2016 09:14

Eve, your poor dd.Sad It's so wrong! Really hope she is ok today.

OrangesandLemonsNow · 10/05/2016 09:19

Oh no Eve. No child should go through this.

As a teacher it is also so heartbreaking to see.
