The dove dove into the water - phonics

DD was reading a bottle of Dove soap

She said it said dove (like dove into the water not dove the bird) because of a split digraph makes the O the name and not the sound. How do I explain it actually says dove (as in the bird)

As long as you are not in a school that teaches tricky words as being words that can't be sounded out and have to be learnt by sight. Then you have even more problems. Grin

The spelling in dove is the same sound as won, son, other, mother, love, glove above, oven, come, some etc etc

English is complex because the same spelling can represent different sounds

not go love one

3cats is correct the past tense of dive is dived not dove

Phonics are much more useful for learning (and retaining) a good sense of spelling.

China (a look and learn teaching system) has massive problems with adults forgetting how to write characters, purely because they type them too much to remember how to hand write. They've introduced calligraphy into the curriculum to try and combat the problem.

I think the Finns would look at you as if you'd gone mad if you suggested there was any other way to learn to read except phonics, but then their DC have to learn Finnish which is 100% decodable - once you know the rules you can read it.

Being taught anything other than phonics is just daft. I look after a wee one who is taught using Jolly Phonics and "Look and Say Words". He can't tell the difference between "wanted" and "Everyone" because they are on his look and say words, he can now tell which is which is he has just "read" one and got it right, he then knows the other one must be the one he didn't say. He has no idea if you give him "everything" without a capital "E". How ludicrous is that?!
