Surrey schools for boys and girls - Farnham, Sutton, Ashtead

I have a 2 year old girl and am expecting a boy later this year. We are currently looking to move out of London into Surrey but a huge factor in this is where the children will go to school to give them the best opportunities in life. (We still need to be commutable into London too).

We're considering a state primary and then potentially moving to a grammar (if they are bright enough to pass the tests!) or independent secondary (if we're in a position to afford it), but I guess we need to have state secondaries as backup if neither of those is an option!

I understand Farnham South is an excellent primary school but I'm concerned about the options for secondary schools (for boys and girls) if we move to Farnham...any advice?

Alternatively, the Sutton area has a few really good grammar schools which could provide good options for secondary, but what about primary schools there?

Ashtead is another option, independent schools offer good options there (Downsend and City of London Freemens), but what about state/grammar options?

Any advice about any of these areas or even alternative suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks :)

Epsom has good primaries and options for state secondary are also good. If you live in the right place your girl could go to Rosebery (girls school) and boy to Glyn (Boys school). Rosebery and Glyn are perhaps the most sort after but the other Epsom secondaries, Blenheim and Epsom and Ewell are also very good - exam results lower but good value added. There is also access to several independents including the two you mention. From Esom you could consider the Sutton Grammers, Nonsuch (girls school) being the nearest but Sutton Grammar (boys) being reasonably accessible by train.

The grammars you mention are "superselective", v hard to get in.

From South Farnham children will typically go onto Weydon Secondary School which has a very good reputation.

IDismyname · 06/02/2016 23:47

YY to Weydon. I hear lots of good stuff about it locally.
Nearest grammar schools are Portsmouth and Guildford. Only take the brightest kids.

DanFmDorking · 07/02/2016 18:24

Surrey CC doesn't have any Grammar schools.
The Royal Grammar School at Guildford is an Independent School.
South Farnham is outstanding and Weydon is outstanding.

Portsmouth Grammar is independent too.

I'm Ashtead there are great primaries and Therfield in Leatherhead used to be a fanatic secondary. Well it was when I was there so worth checking it out.

homebythesea · 08/02/2016 23:59

Therfield got below national average GCSE results this year. Locally it is the one that is considered best avoided if possible.

merlottime · 09/02/2016 07:49

Therfield has a new Headteacher and I know several people with kids at the school who say it is much improved as a result. It may take a while for the word to get out and it will depend on this year's results, but it's one to watch I think.

Really? How times change.! I guess it was a long time ago but that school was ace. Brilliant work ethic from everyone and loads of extra curricular. Heads do make or break a school
