Anyone else planning maths end of year 3 catch up over the holidays

Hi, just wondered if anyone was planning to help their end of year 3 dc try to catch up in maths over the holidays. Am looking for inspiration and to share activity plans and ways of making it fun. DD 8.8 is only working towards yr 3 level and particularly needs building her understanding of number and place value according to her teacher. Thanks

Just to add that I will be working a lot of the holidays and have two other dc so am always under time pressures

Yes. Catch up needed here too, but Y4. Any ideas gratefully received! My DD is somewhat reluctant to do anything academic outside of school so I need to help by stealth. I can probably get away with 10 minutes of her attention before the mood changes and no one will end up happy!! So as much maths in disguise as possible.....

Well all I've done so far is order a couple of maths year 3 books from Amazon. Really need to find out first what is on the curriculum and where she is with the understanding. Then I guess we'll try and work out as many 'more fun than work book' practical activities and games in. I really want to help her confidence. She is my easy going child and she slips through unnoticed sometimes in our family. Hate to think she's struggling. She's not going great on English either.

She is doing well at roller skating and swimming

If she likes roller skating and swimming, is it worth offering a reward for all her hard work each week? Maybe if she manages 20 mins a day of maths, then once a week she could choose to go to a pool of her choice or a roller rink? Thinking along the same lines for my DD.

The CGP books are good for both numeracy and literacy.

The Letts mythical maths series is good.

You could also do one sum of the times table every day and just keep asking the days sum throughout the day. Start by finding which they do not know. Then what is six times seven? That's how many sums they could learn over the holidays.

I am so annoyed by end of year 3 maths.

DD got a 2A last year. Perfect, felt right for her. Slightly above average.

End of Yr 3 she is now Below Expected Age Attainment. Which if I refer back to the NC sheet supplied last year from school, to be below expectation at end of Yr 3 would need to be a 2B. Yet her report says she has made progress.

And add that school have supplied Doodle maths App, which tells me that her age in Maths is 8 1/2. Surely that's pretty average for end of Yr3? She was only 8 in May.

Peanutbutter Doodle maths is overloaded with place value. Seems to be the only questions asked. Not sure how much it is for parents but it seems good. I have set an alarm on the ipad everyday and it prompts her to do the maths.

I'm waiting to speak to head over report. Don't think they have looked at this very clearly. I want to gain info on exactly how the curriculum has changed and what DD is now behind in.

If doing worksheets is a bit boring, maybe to set up a reward system. Like for every page of worksheet that she has done, she can get a star, then 10 stars get be changed into something she like? Our house, for DS2, 10 stars can be changed into an extra minecraft turn.

We're in also. Dd finished year 2 above in maths and we are getting her school report today but I am pretty certain she won't be anywhere near what the new curriculum requires so planning to do some catching up over the summer.

I am planning to order the Letts new activity books for 8-9 years old as they apparently support the new curriculum. She'll be 8 in August so one of the youngest in her year which doesn't help I assume.

Got her a watch also to wear and tell the time, she is good at telling the time but not able yet to do problem solving with time eg. If the train left at 8,30 what time did it get there if the train journey was 45 min.

The curriculum has changed this year!! Children that would previously have been hitting age group expectations are now going to be below them. Schools have also had to spend time this year "catching up" with the work that the new curriculum expected them to have done in previous years - so they've had to cover more material than usual.

We're planning on doing maths and writing over the summer - DS fine in maths but our school subscribes to the mathletics site and DS seems to think its a 'game' when I let him do it on the ipad app.

We're also investing in the carol vorderman 10minute workbooks - they even come with a little timer so that you literally only do 10mins then stop. DS will cope just fine with that, he likes a time limit on 'home'work

Plus his writing skills need consolidating so i've bought a carol vorderman workbook for that too. Will alternate the 2 each week.

The mystical maths was v popular with DS around that age. I would really recommend it. Combined it with rewards of course

Sugar you don't sound pushy don't worry, I think we are all worried about our DCs falling behind due to the new NC.

We have Mathletics also so we'll use that, good resource.

The BBC Bitesize maths is good, the format is fun and just 10 mins a day keeps their brains ticking over.

I was going to recommend doodlemaths, too. It has the merit of teaching the new curriculum and giving you a clear record of how your child is progressing

It's teaching bits aren't so good (dd1 often needs some help on the new concepts it has taught her) but for practising things she's already been taught it's really good. I can see she's now really got a couple of things she was a bit wobbly on before.

Sounds like we're all in the same boat. We've had lots of info and reassurance from school this year re the new curriculum and assessments so that does help to put it all into perspective. I just want her to at least tread water over the summer and consolidate some of the learning she did this year, if not move along a bit. I don't think a 5 week break is going to help her just now Plus, given the time I love doing maths with my dc. Is just hard to fit it in normally! I've ordered the Letts mythical book and she has mathletics from school. Will try the iPad app too if can persuade dh to get it on his iPad.

Doodlemaths seems enjoyable. Glad it's on Android too

I have a voucher for a month of mathsfactor for £1 if you are interested (PM me). My DD did the summer club there last year and used to argue with me to get more screen time so she could do more of it! We'll be doing it again this summer.

So I have bought the Letts book, DD is happily doing one question before every session of Animal Jam. So far so good.

Her teacher gave me a wad of info on the last day but I haven't had a chance to check it til now. She printed out the basis of the curriculum that our year 3 had to follow this year.

It's pretty lengthy but thought I would share it here. It has Outcomes and these are the most parent friendly so here goes.... (might have to do this in sections!)
