And how much is too much?

DS2's primary is one form entry and is currently looking for 3 (yes3!) teachers. As always, its the good ones who going.

Luckily DS2 is leaving too, but some of the remaining parents must be wondering what to expect. Ditto ofsted whose visit is overdue now. I think there is only one teacher left now who was there the last time Ofsted visited.

No class teachers but the head is leaving & the deputy is on maternity leave so there will be changes.

so 3/7 are leaving this year. 43%

( but that is just one as we only have 4!) Still no replacement lined up though!!

My daughter's school... losing a TA, 2 maternity leave teachers and one teacher to replace someone who got promoted required. In a 2 form entry school.

My own school... losing 1 part time member of staff (2 days a week) as well as not replacing a retiring TA or a TA on maternity leave.

Foundation phase ratios have changed, so there's less money in the pot.

We have 4 new teachers starting in September out of 7...

I think 1 teacher out of 17. So, under 6%.

Dd2s school are not losing anyone. It's nice there and they all want to stay.

A teacher leaving and a TA retiring at DD's school. At the school I used to work at (1 form entry primary, 7 classes) 3 teachers left last July, this year 4 teachers and 5 TAs leaving.

This year.

In September there will be 5 NQTs starting (plus 2 non-NQTs) in my DS's Primary!

Central London, three form entry, about 15% class teachers leaving and 15% TAs.

Change can be good too. NQTs can be fresh and brilliant as well as inexperienced with a lot to learn.

In our school we are losing 5% (1 part time teacher and the job share partner is stepping up to 100%). Its a great school with excellent teachers but sometimes I worry that there is no fresh blood.

var123 - aren't there any part time teachers or a non-teaching head? I just wonder whether it is 3 out of more than 7. Still sounds like a lot. Any idea why they are going? It could just be coincidence.

JasonsBum - surely at least one of the people leaving this year from your school only arrived in September?

Is it unpleasant to work there or just coincidence?

3 out of about 27, plus a retiring TA. 2 of the 3 are relocating for family reasons, the third for promotion (dd is gutted, she loved him).

Sometimes it is more than that, think 6 went this time last year. In a big school is to he expected, in your situation I would be concerned.

In my school's case 3 full-time class teachers are leaving - a NQT and 2 well established, popular teachers.
Last year it was 2 teachers - one who'd been there about 15 years and was moving jobs and the other one who was retiring.

Parents have been complaining that the school is going downhill but this seems to make it likely that the parents are right. Its going to be interesting to see what Ofsted make of it.

Youngest in reception so will be interesting to see how it pans out.
I'm a teacher though, and it's not the great job it used to be. Many leaving to change career or just stop without a job to go to.

only one and she was on a short term contract. A new teacher has been found though so hopefully she will stay with all the others.

The dcs ahve ben in that school for 6 years and only one other teacher changed (she retired). The HT also left. She retired too.

That tells me that the atmosphere in the school might make a big difference!

2/7 leaving. One left beginning of this term. Another going on Maternity Leave.

Two out of five

We have mixed years and we are losing nursery/reception due to retirement. Years 1/2 is leaving but I don't know why. Years 5/6 is leaving to be closer to home to start a family and the deputy head is leaving for career progression.

Thats 4 out of 5 staff. Not that this is relevant in the slightest but we had a new head in January.

It depends on the reasons. Because if they're all moving to local schools with similar jobs then there probably is an issue. However if they've all got promotions/different reasons then it does happen.

If I take dc's infant school-7 teachers including head:
In the 3 years dd1 was there there was 1 teacher changed over the entire time. The head left (retired) at the same time as her.

When dd2 was there there was 1 year when 5 teachers left. Reasons:

1. She had been going to retire the year the head moved on but as she was the deputy she agreed to stay on 1-2 years to keep some continuity.
2. OH was in the army and he was moved on.
3. Promotion to deputy
4. They had moved during the year and found commuting 25+ miles more of a drag than they'd expected, so got a job closer to home.
5. Mother had been taken very ill suddenly so took early retirement to care for her (also some distance away)

The rumours of the arguement in the staff room were interesting and imaginative.

Then if I look at the 3 years ds had there-he had 7 teachers over the course of his time there. One year was a job share, and each year a teacher left midway. Never before had any teachers left part way through a year either!
Again they all moved with good reason (Maternity leave, OH's job moving, promotion etc.)

Actually it's a much better school than when dd1 was there. The teachers had got very set in their ways, and very much a team that did things the same way.
They're now a good team which complements each other without being mirror images. And the changes they get are now due to maternity leave typically rather than retiring, but it brings in fresh ideas and different thoughts. Previously they were so closeknit that even if someone had come in with a brilliant new idea they'd have probably been outvoted by the status quo.

The head is leaving (having been at the school for over 30 years) and 1 Ta is leaving. That's it but the school has very low staff turnover generally

Secondary school has 20/50 going. SLT is a bit of a shocker
