Does anyone know anything about the vision test that's carried out in Reception?

Especially when it should be carried out, and a link to the relevant info.

TIA.

they should have an eye test annually really. DD wears glasses but still got the primary school check. DS actually got his eye check in his pre-school year at nursery (Scotland). They both go to the optician annually too.

I am really surprised that so few people seem to take their children to the optician as a matter of course. Being able to see properly is so important.

But I wore glasses as a child and there are lots of sight problems in my family so I guess it's something I'm very aware of. Perhaps opticians should start a campaign!

Do tell the optician their age. I took dd aged just 5 as she wasn't tested at school and no adjustments were made. She is tall and looks older. She read the chart phonetically Grin

I find it astonishing that people don't get their kids eyes tested befor starting school, it is free and takes a few mins! Why would you wait for the school check? There are always threads on here 'turns out my child has a sight issue and needs glasses' ...why have these people not sorted that before starting school, it is negligent!!

I asked my usual high street opticians if they could also do ds, who was age 4 or 3, and i got a very rude "no! We don't do children until they start school!" , so I didn't know until recently that plenty of other opticians do.

By the way if your child's eyes are fine do you get a letter? Ds not been tested as far as I know, and is 5 already, but I know a child in the other reception class in the school who has been checked and had a problem
