2014 SATs Level 6 percentages

The DfE relased some 2014 SATs results data today which for the most part mysteriously shows significant improvements in the last set we'll see before the general election. I worked out some percentages for 2013 which looked like this:

Reading: 0.4%
Maths: 6.5%
SPaG: 1.6%

I haven't taken as much care to remove this and that handful of children from the total eligible in 2014, but they look like this:

Reading: 0.15%
Maths: 8.9%
SPaG: 3.8%

I expected them all to go up but although there were more pupils the tiny number passing L6 Reading got significantly tinier (851 this year, 2178 last year).

I did notice one rude and aggressive poster on the thread but they definitely weren't berating the OP

mrz · 29/08/2014 18:21

StillWishihadabs the thread is about KS2 SATs not the 11+

TheWordFactory · 29/08/2014 18:21

Certainly there are posters on MN that are against homework , testing, rote learning, tutoring...

teacherwith2kids · 29/08/2014 18:21

Stil, but that is not the point Seagulls was making.

Her point was that pushing high ability pupils IN SCHOOL was commonly seen as tantamount to child abuse:

Her actual words were:
"a tendency to view pushing kids in the state sector as tantamount to child abuse", and both mrz and I, as state school teachers, interpreted that as meaning 'in state sector schools'.

mrz · 29/08/2014 18:27

OFSTED inspections were changed so that schools could no longer rely on intake and parents paying for tutors.

SeagullsAndSand · 29/08/2014 18:33

Mrz erm we didn't introduce the 11+ into the thread.

mrz · 29/08/2014 18:35

No but you suggested I check it out SeagullsAndSand or did you forget?

SeagullsAndSand · 29/08/2014 18:35

Really Mrz so it is 100% not possible that it still happens.Blimey Ofsted are good.

SeagullsAndSand · 29/08/2014 18:36

Yes I did but I didn't link to it or bring it up.If others are allowed to make ref to it not seeing why others can't.

teacherwith2kids · 29/08/2014 18:40

Just out of interest - because re-reading it I can see that I could have misinterpreted it.

Did you mean:
"External coaching for 11+, and other OUT OF SCHOOL activities such as tutoring, extra homework etc are seen as tantamount to child abuse"

OR

"Teaching able children to their ability IN SCHOOL is seen as tantamount to child abuse"?

I interpreted it as the second, but on re-reading wonder whether you meant the former?

mrz · 29/08/2014 18:40

Well if all children aren't making appropriate progress based on their ability and starting point then teaching would be classed as requiring improvement or inadequate and the teacher could face compentency ... so it's only a matter of time before cruising schools are found out.

SeagullsAndSand · 29/08/2014 18:42

I meant the former.Smile

SeagullsAndSand · 29/08/2014 18:44

But kids can make adequate progress from their starting point due to parents filling the gaps. Also what if the teaching at the starting point was shit?

StillWishihadabs · 29/08/2014 18:51

Ok 11+ (which is a state examination after all) not withstanding. Maybe ds needs to do 50 mins a day in order to be challenged, so maybe that's the sort of homework the school should be setting for him to reach his potential (rather than coasting along to 4/5 KS2 sats). It's really not an awful lot of work for a child who is awake for 15 hours a day......

mrz · 29/08/2014 18:52

Well if the teaching at the starting point was shit then they won't have made approriate (not adequate) progress would they!

SeagullsAndSand · 29/08/2014 18:54

My son has because I filled the gaps.

mrz · 29/08/2014 18:56

11+ isn't a state examination StillWishihadabs.

SeagullsAndSand · 29/08/2014 18:56

Yes me with my pointy elbows who is allowed to sharpen them for some things but not others.

mrz · 29/08/2014 18:57

So if OFSTED asked you would tell them that ... and they do ask for parental feedback

SeagullsAndSand · 29/08/2014 18:58

It is for entry to a state school(I think we all know what she meant)Hmm,some are even linked to NC levels, ours is. They are quoted on their website.

SeagullsAndSand · 29/08/2014 18:59

What in that oh so useful Parentview form?

StillWishihadabs · 29/08/2014 18:59

er it is administered by the county council. how is it not a state exam ?

mrz · 29/08/2014 19:02

No SeagullsAndSand a nice little face to face chat with the lead inspector

SeagullsAndSand · 29/08/2014 19:04

Well,of course if the opportunity presented itself.

mrz · 29/08/2014 19:09

Because it is an external test administered to some children in a handful of schools around England StillWishihadabs
