Things that make you proud in school reports (that are NOT related to NC levels)

Last year I remember a thread which was basically everyone sharing things from school reports that they were proud of, that had nothing to do with NC levels. It just about made me cry with the lovely things everyone was proud of. So, everyone, please share .

For me, I was really proud that the teacher said that my DD always had lovely ideas for her writing. I was also really proud that she had moved from virtually being a selective mute with the teachers (for two terms), to choosing to stand up one day in front of the class and talk to the class about her fairies she had brought in. Apparently she didn't say much, but she was happy telling everyone about them nonetheless.

DS (just finishing Reception) is "a delightful little boy".

I already thought he was, but it's lovely to have it officially confirmed.

I was very happy to read my sons Y4 school report today. He is calm and thoughtful, compassionate, always polite, teacher can rely on him to always try his hardest, and she is going to miss his quick wit and sense of humour. My heart melts.

I smirked a bit to myself about DS being a "reliable" member of the guitar ensemble, because I thought it sounded like the teacher was casting around for something to say. And then I thought, blinking right - he gets up early every week to make sure he is on time for that and he plugs away and he may not be naturally talented but he has plodded along week in, week out and they sounded lovely at the end of term.

And I thought, maybe kids need to learn that reliable, while not earth shattering, is actually a good and praiseworthy thing to be.

I like these threads, it makes me realise that the hours and hours I spend writing individual, non copy and pasted reports about each actual child and their personality mean something to parents.

KittyandTeal you remind me that I must fill in my feed back sheet for my DD's teacher and thank her exactly for taking the time to come up with something personal about my DD. I was so touched and happy to see a description of my little girl in the report.

It is very appreciated Kitty, although one of DC's teachers wrote a lot, all individually tailored and I did worry how she'd managed to fit in any sleeping and eating.

DS (5) "greets us every morning with a big smile and is very polite and friendly"

DD (4) "has some lovely friendships" "a good relationship with her teachers" and they "know she will do well" next year

If only they were so lovely at home...

DD (age 8) has the rare quality of genuinely rejoicing in others successes. This made me proud!

DS1 had a comment about how kind he was with his peers wen they were upset and that he was able to help them (not do the work for them) with their work really well.

lovely children, lovely comments, lovely teachers for taking the time to write them.

Just kind of makes life worthwhile doesn't it .

I liked the part in DS report that said he was a kind and sensitive member of the class and in DD's which said she had been a pleasure to teach. These were the things I made a point of telling them I was particularly proud of.

The personal comment my DS's reception teacher wrote is ingrained in my memory forever. During the (awful) year he was diagnosed with complex needs and she helped get him a statement for the start of Year 1. "I have very much enjoyed having x in my class this year. I know it has been a difficult year but he has faced it with courage and a gentle manner. He is a kind and loving boy with a wonderful sense of humour. I wish him the best of luck in Year 1 and I shall miss him enormously." He's just finished year 7 and it still makes me blub.

I have 3 DC and they are all very different. My middle DD is very, very bright so her reports all concentrate on her intelligence, but she is prone to being competitive and hysterical.

My youngest DD (only 4) has a learning disability of some sort, I suspect will eventually be diagnosed as having ASD. She struggles with language and new concepts. Her teacher this year described her as the most kind, loving little girl who is more concerned about the well being of others in the class than herself. A new child started mid-term and my DD took her under her wing.

If I had to choose between my child being clever or my child being nice, I would choose nice every time (not saying my middle DD is horrible!).

I was chuffed when I read about DD's strong friendships and how she so much enjoys spending time with her friends.

Also about her strong sense of right and wrong and ability to take others' feelings into consideration.

Also that she is a "keen artist" - as someone who was useless at art this makes me chuffed to see her have abilities I didn't have.

She's only just 5 bless her, too little for a 5 page report really!

DD (5) just had her very first school report.

Her (very lovely) teacher said that she takes other childrens ideas into account during group work which shows good empathy. She can also focus beautifully on an individual task in a busy classroom and is not easily distracted.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this as she can be a bossy little madame at home with her brother!

I think social skills/classroom ettiquette are so much more important than academia when they are small. I'm so grateful to her teacher for taking the time to write such an individual report.

Love that I can always recognise my DS in his reports - no standard phrases and identikit reports here.

My y6 DS is "kind, extremely well mannered and has great relationships with his peers. He has grown hugely in confidence and is enthusiastic, thoughtful and hard working."

"He should be so proud of the writing he has produced this year...his writing is a joy to read; on several occasions the class and I have been entertained and even moved by S's writing. He has developed an authorial tone."

I am so proud of him!

Yr 6 DS here: my favourite comment was from his sports teacher who commented on DS's lack of ego, which reminds him (sports teacher) why he loves teaching this age group

That was one of my favourite comments. But a lovely report all round - I really felt that these were teachers who knew my DS and had thought about what to write.

Like Raisin I love the reports that really describe my dc.

Can't stand the "We have covered x/y/z' generic ones or the cut and paste phrases although I have every sympathy with a Primary school one where teachers are expected to come up with comments for every bllomin subject.

Don't mind if it's not all positive - just want it to be honest.

My favourite bit in Yr4 DS1s report, not the bit I'm most proud of, is from his art teacher. "Sewing is not F's thing, or so he tells me". He has Aspergers and says what he thinks!

DD's yr1 report made me cry.

The Head Teacher wrote " I have been amazed by x's rapid progress this year. Her performance in the recent class assembly was brilliant!"

My DD spent reception year hiding her face under her arm and would shake with fear and sob if she was made to "perform" anything. Now she sings and speaks louder than anyone!

My favourite bit of DSs(5) report is his teacher comment
'Xxxx is a kind and sensitive child, conscious of others feelings and he always has excellent manners'

My P1'er got "Mini0dd is our role model for excellent behaviour and attention to lessons in the class."

He was the teachers pet.

His report is full of how lovely, clever and hardworking he is. His writing is "impressive" and his artwork "fabulous".

The line that made me laugh was, "despite our best efforts Mini0dd is adamant he does not like fruit." It was a little thing but makes it clear they get to know the children so well.

He was a bit of a homebody and can be fairly introverted so I was a little apprehensive about how he'd find school. His teacher was amazing with him. He's come on such a lot, grown in confidence, learnt so much in his first year. I couldn't have asked for a better start.

My older DS is "a lovely boy with a great sense of humour." Also lots of praise for his art work and some comments that's he can be a bit too chatty. Can't think who he takes after.

My ds is a talented know-it-all, if truth be told, and usually gets good reports in academic subjects and extra-curricular music/drama. However, he is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a sportsman. His Yr 9 PE teacher was obviously stumped as to what on earth he could say that was positive, so came up with "N is one of the most well-mannered boys I've ever taught." Back in Yr 1, his teacher (who is now my job-share partner, coincidentally) reported him being " a bit wriggly on the carpet."

Dd's form tutor from Yrs 7-9 was fabulous. You really felt she knew all of them, and I always looked forward to her comments. There were things like "I am SO PROUD of M, and how hard she has pushed herself this year. All her teachers report that she is a pleasure to teach."

Our primary is big on personal comments. We haven't had our reports yet, but they always make a big effort in Yr6 so am looking forward to DD2's report.

We had DD1's report back in late May, she's secondary so a lot more computerised phrase bank stuff - but her science, history, geography and English teachers really made an effort and showed they 'got' her. Hearing a 13-year-old being described as 'having an ability to empathise with both sides in a political conflict in a way that is mature beyond her years' just made me so proud.

This is a lovely thread. My year 6 son's report started off "The most striking thing about x is his ability to be deliriously happy almost all of the time". It went on to say that he was happy to sit next to and work with any other child in his class and actively welcomed anyone being otherwise "left out". Made me very proud. He is a happy and kind boy.
