If your child is ending year one this year and you have received their report, would you mind sharing their levels? Also if you received the phonics check results. I was expecting dd's to be included in the report but it wasn't so will ask teacher.
Reading =1A
Writing =1B
Maths = 1A
Effort = excellent all the way.
I am very pleased with the whole report and so is she, but it would be nice to have a rough idea how others in the same year did. Thanks

1C for everything
18 for phonics check

Excellent effort for everything though. He tries his hardest but finds it all so hard Sad

CookieDoughKid · 11/07/2014 22:43

Don't worry too much at this stage Goldendandelion. There is plenty of time to catchup at this age. And grades aren't everything (though they do give one a headstart in life). I graduated with ''only'' a 2:2 in Chemistry but had a stellar career in the city.....

So glad I found this thread. What I am confused by (and cant wait til Monday to find out) is that next to the levels is "Age Related Expectation" which is 1a/2C.

Daft question: is that age related expectation specific to my child, or the average for the class? DS will be 6 at the end of July, one of his classmates is 7 at the beginning of September. DS' teacher (lovely NQT) kept referring to "when they are 6, xx is expected" at Parents Evening in March, we kept saying "but he is not 6 til end of July!"

Reading 1b - Turquoise books since May. Age Related Expectation 1a/2C.
Writing 1b Age Related Expectation: 1a/2C.
Maths 1b Age Related Expectation: 1a/2C.

Phonics test 38/40

Thanks

teafor1 · 12/07/2014 08:34

We weren't given levels for end of year reports and I'm not sure yet if I'm going to ask for them. A few months ago ds levels were 1c writing, 1b maths and 1a reading. I certainly hope that all levels have increased. Reading and maths most likely have and I really hope writing has! Writing is a major weak point. He got 39/40 on the phonics test.

I just wants to add some more level 1's to this discussion!

lljkk · 12/07/2014 08:37

DS seems to have a unique phonics score! 35.
We don't get levels thanks goodness. He gets top marks for effort, phew!

RaisinBoys · 12/07/2014 09:27

Aren't MN children a clever bunch?!

To those whose children are not reaching the dizzy heights of level 3 by the age of 5, don't panic!

Children's learning is not necessarily linear...they learn in fits and starts, with peaks and plateaus.

My now y6 scored Level 2's at end year 2 - a positive failure in mumsnet land. He has finished his primary career on 5's and 6's (if that is how success is measured). More important to us is that he loves books, writes with passion and knows how much change to expect in the local shop.

Well done to all those little year 1's who have worked their tiny little socks off. Celebrate their achievements and don't get distracted by the rarefied world of the MN prodigy.

Keep up with the reading for pleasure!

RaisinBoys · 12/07/2014 09:28

PS. August born DS too!!

gingercat12 · 12/07/2014 18:10

raisinboys Thanks for the reassurance Thanks

gamescompendium · 12/07/2014 18:27

My DD1 is a winter baby and got 2bs and 2cs. Her sister is in Reception and is a summer baby. The difference in achievement by school year is noticable but e.g. if I compare DD1's handwriting at just 5 and compare it with DD2's now it's comparable. Same with reading. When they do computer games maths at home DD2 can keep up with her big sister in a lot of areas.

Personality (as well as ability) has a lot to do with it. We do the bare minimum of homework with the kids but all the usual middle class parenting activities. But DD1 was determined to read and would practice reading herself every day in reception, and was writing for herself as part of her play before she started school. Surprise, surprise that has given her a lot of practice and so she does particularly well at those subjects.

And let's not get into if teachers have pressure to reduce the levels for the bright kids so when they get to Y6 they want their L5s to look good.

strange post raisin....

Ilelo · 14/07/2014 13:07

No offence meant to anyone or their DC but why is "academic success" in its simplest form so wrong on mumsnet?

gingercat12 · 14/07/2014 13:45

I thought raisinboys meant that lack of academic success in Y1 does not make your child a complete failure and we should celebrate their hard work.

IamSlave · 14/07/2014 13:49

No offence meant to anyone or their DC but why is "academic success" in its simplest form so wrong on mumsnet

its not to most of us! its important to be allowed to talk and share information. we dont want people closing us down, for fear of boasting or otherwise.

ginger YES some aspect of her post do relay that message others...sound bitchy and crass.

SockPinchingMonster · 14/07/2014 17:53

RaisinBoys - would you rather people come on here and lie about the levels their children achieved. The OP asked people to tell her their dc's levels, she didn't ask people to only comment if their children's levels were average or below. There's really no need for the bitchiness.
I entirely agree that children learn in fits and starts which is why I don't think too much importance should be put on the levels at the end of year 1 - some children will blossom when they're a little older and overtake children who are ahead of them now.

mrz · 14/07/2014 18:43

Posts on MN aren't representative is that because only parents of very clever children use MN ?

MrsWombat · 15/07/2014 07:21

I got DS's phonics score with his school report but no levels as they are not reportable until year 2. However it's parents evening on Wednesday and I think I will be told them then as we were told his predicted levels for end of year 1 and current levels at the previous two parents evenings.

frutilla · 15/07/2014 14:15

National Expectation stated as 1a (should we all have the same national expectation level on our DC's reports!!!!)

Reading 1A
Writing 1B
Maths 1B

Phonics score 40 - passed

WT- (working towards National Expect) - In PE, ART and Deseign/Tech
M - (met National Expect) - In ICT, Theme, Re, Music,
E - (exceeded National Expect) In Science

frutilla · 15/07/2014 14:15

Sorry, I mean's "shouldn't we all have the same NE level on our DC's reports"

mrz · 15/07/2014 18:07

frutilla there aren't any national expectations for the end of Y1 only for the end of each Key Stage (Y2 & Y6) which is why schools don't have the same on their reports - they are made up! www.education.gov.uk/schools/performance/archive/ks3_05/k5.shtml

but as you can see individual schools set their own expectations which can vary from school to school.

RaisinBoys does have a point and I think was trying to reassure...

mumtoateen · 15/07/2014 18:44

When DD was in year one:
Writing 2c
Reading 3c (she was an avid reader and reading far above her age group)
Maths 2c

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 16/07/2014 17:40

I think the point is the parents who choose to reply to a thread like this are self selecting and therefore more likely to have high achieving DCs. Also if you're hanging out on the Primary Ed board of a site like MN you probably are interested in education and how to help your DCs achieve well at school. Also the demographic of MN as a whole is more well educated than a lot of similar parenting sites. Therefore the DC's marks are likely to be high.

For what it's worth my DD's report is very good but in our middle class state primary I doubt it's that unusual.

RaisinBoys · 16/07/2014 19:50

IamSlave can't see what is "strange" about my post nor was it about "closing you down". My opinion differs to yours - it is a forum - I do not have to water it down or sugar coat it for your benefit.

sockpinchingmaster no "bitchiness" in my post. MN children ARE a clever bunch - just read the threads. I count my own son in that.

And Ilelo to use the term "academic success" when talking about 5 year olds is faintly ludicrous.

I love to celebrate children doing well but to compare the levels of random children, who come with different starting points and different experiences of schooling, in y1 is madness.

The OP wants others to share levels to compare her own child against? How does comparing against a self selecting minority help her help her own child in any way?

RaisinBoys · 16/07/2014 19:54

IamSlave I forgot "bitchy and crass". I'm wounded!

Name calling? At your age? Please!

RaisinBoys · 16/07/2014 19:56
