If your child is ending year one this year and you have received their report, would you mind sharing their levels? Also if you received the phonics check results. I was expecting dd's to be included in the report but it wasn't so will ask teacher.
Reading =1A
Writing =1B
Maths = 1A
Effort = excellent all the way.
I am very pleased with the whole report and so is she, but it would be nice to have a rough idea how others in the same year did. Thanks

Out of interest, how do year 2 teachers handle children finishing year 1 with level 3?

Report
mrz · 09/07/2014 06:50

The same way they handle children leaving Y1 at level 1

Reading 2a
Writing 2a
Maths 2b

Nobody mentioned a phonics test.

Report
FatalCabbage · 09/07/2014 07:31

40/40
2c reading
2b writing
2b numeracy

The rest of the report was narrative.

What was more interesting to me were the statistics we were given about the phonics screening. We were given %age pass/fail nationally and in our school, for all children and then by sex. It's single-form entry with a girl-heavy balance, so the numbers were actually pretty identifying.

Far too many children didn't get 32/40. I want to know what support their Y2 teacher will get to drag those children up to an acceptable phonics level whilst at the same time stimulating my child and his peers. It was made clear at parents' evening that he and one other are exceptional within the class, but although that's gratifying it isn't encouraging.

We're in Wales so the levels DS1 has received are based on the Welsh EYFS.

Ds1 had only two levels, for English and Maths. English was level 5b, Maths 6B.

Can anyone 'convert' those into the standard levels that English schools use. I have no idea what they mean in comparison.

40 phonics
Level 3 in maths and reading (no a,b,c)
2a writing

When dd did the phonics check, parents weren't given individual scores. There was just a letter which said that they had (or hadn't) scored the 'set' level for the test.

Still no reports. Apparently we will get them tomorrow. Parent teacher consultation is early next week, so how can a working parent really book it?!

Phonics test 39/40. If DS is right, only 9 of them passed. (He may have got it wrong and 9 of them failed.)

We didn't get levels. Ours were scored 'lower than expected' 'as expected' and 'higher than expected' She got 'as expected' for writing and 'higher than expected' for maths and reading. I'm a teacher (not in her school) and 'as expected' is 1A or 1B.
Quite frankly I'm surprised by her Maths as I think it's pretty rubbish! She's not a natural' unsurprised by reading as she's fluent and has been all year, and bit disappointed with writing. Think that's a maturity thing though as she's summer born and still only 5.

I would have been really interested to know if those with the 2 a/b or c were summer born and are we in state or private.

Mine was 2 a/b and c. she is sept born...so older one in year, state school.

Writing 2C+
Reading 2B+
Maths 2C+
Science 2C
Phonics 37

Just some added context. We are a CofE state school in a village but it's definitely a wealthy village. 60-70% of her peers got the high 2s and I don't think it's coincidence. I think my dc is doing well but she is definitely not top of class. Nearly all the parents in dc's class are professionals (lawyers,doctors, entrepreneur millionaires (of which there are several) etc) if that makes any difference in the higher %%?.

IAmSlave my 2b/40 scoring child is a summer boy at a state school and we do precisely zero cramming at home. He is very self-motivated, which is lucky for him and lazy me.

Iamslave born in the winter :)

I do think having summer born children is at a slight disadvantage myself but I think there is much one can anyway to progress. FWIW - I do Mathletics or some other Maths with my dc every couple of days and we read every day about 15mins. I know kids in her class do homework and others like music more intensively.

My ds is feb born, state school. He really likes math, and is in chess club. He also does sports (badly!!) but does try. We do reading every night, and math most days (his choice).

State school here too. We do homework and set reading. She enjoys reading and reads other books outside school's.

In addition to random moments of learning arising from something we've heard on tv etc, we occasionally do work at home depending on how tired we both are. Probably about an hour a week/forthnight on average. I believe in tutoring to support school, just not dedicated enough yet.

I do stuff in holidays, not every day I am not that routine minded...I have the workbooks that are made to seem fun....those are lying round anyway...and I will write out no bonds for her to do , or tables...there is no stop watch so we do a bit until she gets bored...I read to her a few nights a week....and she reads a couple of times a week to me.

Its in the holidays I have most time to help bring on vocab, read history stuff...and things like that, no time in term time.

I find a tiny bit of one on one goes a very long way

Massive state primary with a lousy Ofsted under its belt (but fab new ht!):

Reading: 2b
Writing: 2b
Maths: 2c
Phonics: 37

Apparently dd makes "adventurous choices in her vocabulary" in writing Grin

May born twins here;
Dd - Reading 2A
Writing. 2B
Maths. 2B
Science 2C
Phonics test 40/40

Ds - Reading 2A
Writing. 2C
Maths. 2C
Science 2C
Phonics test. 40/40

They're in a state school which was dropped down to requiring improvement last year but always gets fab SATs results - usually way above national average, but very middle class intake. Don't do too much extra with them out of school, they read to me every day and we used to do Mathletics a couple of times a week (til school decided not to renew subscription).

We don't get told these levels. All we get are exceeded (A), in line (B), below (C) or well below (D) expected levels. She got a mix of As and Bs with 40 for the phonics.

August born DD just got 1b for both Reading and Writing and 1a for Maths. Very good (top level) for effort. Exceeding expectations for Maths. 33 for phonics test.

I'm very pleased!

No levels here, but a glowing report. (sorry for boasting - proud mamma). YR did not go so well for DS, or at least he was not considered academic at all. In Y1 he has done amazing progress. Even I could tell. But I am obviously pleased the teacher noticed it, too. Suddenly he is into everything and fluent reader (phonics test 39/40). It is mainly due to his Y1 teacher whom he loves. We are very lucky.

It is a large primary school in quite a mixed area. There is quite a lot of deprivation, but this is the school for pushy parents' (guilty as charged) children as well in the area, as it is ranked No 1 in whichever listing. There is a large blue chip multi-national company not far from the school, and a lot of the highly-qualified foreign parents send their children there as well, so many languages are spoken, but all the children are fluent in English (as far as I can tell).

No tutoring. DS is an only child, so we can both afford to read to him every day and he reads to us well. This entails long discussions about the story and life in general. We do try to make him practice spelling and maths, etc but this month he is far too knackered, and he does far more writing and counting with his toys in his room than what I would set him anyway.

Reading 2A, everything else 2C. September born child in state school with mixed intake and Ofsted requiring improvement. Doing fantastically in her school (fab teacher does separate planning for DD) but just average in the world of mumsnet! Grin
