11 Plus - what levels would indicate suitability in year 4? She's got the summer term left to go obviously.

Just read her report. Her levels are:
Reading: 4b
Writing: 4c
Numeracy: 3a

Obviously she still has the summer term to go if year four but we are thinking about the 11 plus and wondered if she is on track or not? Numeracy is obviously her weakest point in regards to the 11 plus.

Well I am not much help but am also contemplating the 11+ for DS (yr4) and his levels are: maths 4A, reading 4B, literacy 3A.

My friend who teaches 11 plus school said level 5's working on level 6 - however this is in a super, super selective area.

Ask on the eleven plus forum, it's split by area which will help you more.

In maths; in the area where more year-6 children achieve SAT level 6 than the grammar places, does it mean that the child needs to be around 5A/5B at the end of year 5, thus 5B/5C at the end of year 4 (supposing progress of 1.5 sub levels in one year) ??

It is going to depend on the area, I suspect as to how selective. But at my dc's juniors they would expect the top end to be 4a across the board at the end of year 4. We're not an 11+ area though.

I wish we had 11+ here but it is just standard secondary.

Y4 DS is 5a/6c n maths and a 4a in reading and writing.

I would ask the class teacher what they'd expect at 11+

july the teacher doesn't seem keen on the idea of grammar schools full stop when I bought it up with him and said he didn't like the system. Didn't seem that open for a chat about it?!

Maybe try out a tutor for this last term in year 4 just working on the 'weaker' area. A lot can happen between now and the test. It does depend on which grammar schools you mean, for a super selective area, you'd be looking at gearing up both numeracy and literacy, and some families do manage this as children can have spurts of understanding and leap ahead with school work, just as they can have growth spurts. (It tends to happen if they get a bit of 1-2-1 at home). It's a combination of giving then the environment and support to learn and improve in these areas, while boosting their confidence, to catch their interest so they themselves do the work and remember what they've learned. Some children just don't want to know, aren't switched on to lots of reading and learning how to do well in the papers, so it's better if they are encouraged in what they are good at. Whatever you do, don't present the 11+ as a pass/fail scenario, as that isn't fair. The test is to see which type of learning environment they're best suited to.

I'd still argue that improving any child's maths and literacy is going to help them prepare for their GCSEs, no matter what school they go to, and whether they take the test or not. Talking about the books they read and quizing them on their times tables as part of family life at this age gives them a sense of support and interest. Add in opportunities for them to ask a parent/adult questions and that helps too. It isn't being pushy.
