can anyone humour me and tell me what a typical day of a primary 1 pupil is?

We are in Scotland so dont do reception. My ds LOVES his nursery. Its all fun and play play play. I am feeling a bit apprehensive about how he is going to get on at school when they need to sit and learn.

Ds started p1 last August and much as he likes it he basically lives for playtime and often says he wishes he was back at nursery, especially as it's attached to the school and he often sees the wee ones out playing.
They do lots of fun stuff at school too though and ds was definitely ready for school and settled in quickly. A lot depends on the individual child though.

it might differ by area. Our school now just does 1 half day and then they are straight into full days. Neither dd or ds recall doing the play based learning described in Euphemia's post but they did do the drawing, colouring, cutting out, phonics, number work, etc.

I have one in P3 and one in P6

Reception is much like P1. In the class I work in, the morning involves a short (10 minutes) phonics session, followed by whole group maths (mixed with Y1) then the Y1 sit and do a maths activity on paper while reception choose between various activities - one by one or in small groups they will do a few minutes of a maths activity with an adult, then we stop for fruit and milk, after playtime we have a whole group literacy activity - Y1 then go and do some writing while Reception choose some more and with an adult will draw a picture and write a word or sentence or talk (depending on ability) about their picture. in the afternoons it's more free play with one to one reading, and sometimes other activities with the teacher - there is very little actual sitting at desks learning in the first year of school.

I think there is more structure and sitting at tables in P1 compared with Reception in England and Wales but then the children are 6 months older.

However in P1 at our local school there is still water and sand play available and building blocks and play tables, but it's to be accessed after the sit down tasks are finished iyswim.

A bit of an aside but I think doing a sports activity where they get started on the concept of queueing and turn taking are useful before they start school.

Thanks everyone for replys. Yes i think p1 may be more sitting at tables learning. I have watched the time for school programme on cbeebies, which is a reception class i think. Looks like a lot of fun! But dont think they get that much plat at p1. Ds will be just under 5 when he starts. I think he will do ok. But is a typical boy with lots of energy and nit much preference for sitting still!!
