Lack of assessment of reading in P3 primary.

My ds is in P3. There seems to be no set reading homework so it's hard to judge how his reading is coming on.

He does read in class and occasionally comes home with set pages from a book to read as homework. But he insists that he's to read them to himself (not out loud to me).

I haven't heard him read much at all this school year. He's a competent reader but reluctant to read books to himself. I'm reading Harry Potter to him for fun which he enjoys.

Does this sound okay?

I'd suggest still getting him to read aloud to you at least on some days (even if the school doesn't insist on it). You will catch words they are skipping over plus reading aloud does involve skills that reading in your head doesn't! DS hates reading to me, so we have compromised that he has to do it one day a week, and will talk to me about what he has read, or what we read together, on the other days.
