Her DD is year 3 and has moved to a new school. She has been taught cursive writing since reception and it is the only way she now writes. New teacher has told her not to join up her writing.
I would imagine the rationale may be that in this school, cursive writing comes later.
My fist thoughts were to tell friend to resist this. It's a big ask to tell a child to unlearn their way of writing. In addition to this her DD has some mild learning difficulties and surely this, expectation would add to her burden. What would you suggest?

well unless her handwriting is completely unreadable I don't think it is a fair request from the teacher.

If I was in the mum's position then I think I would say something to the teacher like 'Florence came home and said you had told her not to do joined up writing but I think she must have misunderstood as obviously that is how she has been taught to write' and see what the teacher says.

Tanks nonickname. The teacher has also informed my friend about this. I think she should tell school that handwriting will remain joined up.

I would only have said this to a child if they were either forming letters incorrectly or writing so untidily it was nearly impossible to read. Your friend needs to ask the teacher why (but in a non confrontational way...)

hmm - I agree then that she should ask why? There is no way a child should be made to go backwards and I would have thought that if it was because there was actually a problem with her writing then that should be made clear so that she can work on it.
