DS and dd are avid readers, about to go into years 4 and 5 and spelling not tooooo bad, about spot on for age however DS can lapse. So aside from expecting the hoards of books he reads to improve it what can we do?

Is Look/cover/ write check still worth doing, does it work?Any other tried and tested ideas?

Sometimes practising handwriting can help- the 'feel' of a word, of how it flows, can aid spelling.

Talking about spelling rules might help them too, although English has exceptions to every rule you can teach.
