Do 4 out of 10 really only meet the expected level on the new early learning goals?

We have just received the end of year report for Ds who is just finishing reception year. He's been given emerging for everything but the school have enclosed a letter stating that only 4 out of 10 nationally reach the new expected levels so appear to be dismissing the whole thing

Should i be worried or has 60% of the class really been given the same as Ds.

I should add that the written bit of the report is great but i'm very confused.

Yes, it is true that only 40% (based on past stats) are likely to meet expected level.

I'm guessing the results mean Ds falls into the norm then!

I was worried that only one or two of the categorys like literacy and maths were included in the 40% and not the whole lot.

don't forget that some children willhave been assessed when they were still four.

Only 41% of children in the pilots of the new EYFS profile achieved a good level of development which is a slightly different thing to only 4 in 10 reaching the expected

the figures nationally for the actual profile aren't available yet so could potentially be higher

40% does seem very low to me, but I don't know the new guidelines as my DC school are still using the old ones.

I guess if the written parts are good then they aren't worried - do you have the opportunity to speak to the teacher about the report?

We had a meeting at school today saying that children had to be consistently performing at the expected level in a range of situations to achieve the expected level. They were basically preparing the parents for disappointment I think. Trying to explain that exceeding was extremely rare and basically not going to happen.

Now i'm a tiny bit more confused having looked through your link Mrz!

A good level of development is classed as 32 points added up accross the entire profile which would mean a child would need to score 2 points on each bit (am i right?)

So technically Ds scoring 1 point on all 17 parts is a bit crap then because other children might excel in some bits but be weaker in others and still fall under the 32 points.

The good comments were not really about his fantastic academic progress, more about how lovely he is

No a Good Level of Development is different as it is based on just 12 of the 17 Early Learning Goals in the prime areas of personal, social and emotional development, physical development, and communication and language, and in the specific areas of maths and literacy, whereas the 32 points are based on all 17 ELGs and in fact 61% of children reached the expected level in all the prime areas ... more confused

I think i need to study this further because it seems to get more complicated the more i look into it or maybe just leave it as he is happy most days and hope for the best next year!

We haven't had reports yet so no idea how my reception daughter has got on. From what she does then I think last year she would have done extremely well but looking at the way it is done now she will get expected I think. They do seem to have made it harder than before if I understand it all right.

To be honest whilst I want my child to do well academically if she gets a nice 'blurb' about being lovely then that will mean far more than knowing she is good at work. Well done, you are obviously raising a nicely behaved, nicely mannered child who the teacher enjoys teaching. Much more to be proud of and I am sure if the school had any worries they would make you aware.

Mrz, i've had a good look through the links and have pretty much worked through whats expected now but i cant find any info on whether Ds will need to be at expected level on all of these goals before moving on to NC levels or does the school just charge ahead and assess him on the next lot of expectations

So if the results are as low as in the pilot, will that be taken as evidence that the goals are unrealistic, or that schools are failing our little ones!

I wonder where the criteria for 'expected levels' was derived from. Was it empirically based?

If so, surely the 'levels' should take account of the fact that some of the children are still only 4, as that's been the case in reception in the UK for many, many years.

i was told at school that national is looking about 51% this year.
TBH as a reception teacher the number the bar has been raised so the children this year have achieve more than previous years. Im sure it'll improve as nursery children on the new curriculum come up to reception.

bare can i ask if many of the Dc in your class have missed all 17 of the goals if i've read it right and you are a R teacher.

We have got a meeting with the school this week because Ds has left school with injuries from other children recently and i dont want to express any concern if this is a very common thing as the schools default position with everything appears to be defensive so i dont want to annoy them any more than i have too.

6 children missed ELG in prime areas but most of them achieved it somewhere else such as one child who is amazing with physical aspects but struggles with phonics and numbers.
I think it was 3 that had emerging in everything. I would raise it as 'should I worry' and 'what are you going to do in year 1 to ensure he catches up?'
