Teacher wearing bikini in swimming pool

Hello everyone, I'm new here - this looks like such a lovely community here, and I look forward to participating in many discussions here! I joined because I have a question to ask.

My child (8 years old boy) went on a trip a couple of weeks ago with his school to a swimming pool. They had qualified instructors outside the pool watching the children, but their teacher chose to go into the pool with them.

My boy told me that their teacher was wearing a very revealing bikini (not a sport one - something like this - www.summerinstyle.eu/cache/30b5e2199cc8f5d06d05de6bb991f9ed93d13a03.jpg ) - which was very surprising.

  • do you think this is appropriate for a teacher to wear during school time?

I only own bikinis so when I go swimming for any reason I wear a bikini.
I wouldn't want to buy a swimming costume for what sounds like a one off occurence.
I really don't see any issue with it. Hopefully I'm not offending the world by going to swimming pools wearing a bikini.

Onetwo34 · 03/07/2013 21:30

I only own bikinis.

DespicableYou · 03/07/2013 21:33

at this thread!

So obviously a journalist fishing for responses or something. Who starts a thread like this? And never comes back!

And for all the people saying it's fine and normal and not worth commenting on.

Yes, it is. But you can guarantee there'd be SOME raise eyebrows if most of you witnessed it.

What a crock of shit this thread is from start to finish.

Pagwatch · 03/07/2013 21:34

I have a very, very long body. Swimsuits are incredibly difficult for me to find so I often, in fact usually, wear bikinis
I am 50. He would have been traumatised.
Bwahahahaha

LadyIsabellaWrotham · 03/07/2013 21:38

Surely a journo would have specified that the DS was 13, no?

nenevomito · 03/07/2013 21:39

She was wearing swimming stuff. Swimming.
Its not like she had bollocks.
Like this thread.

DespicableYou · 03/07/2013 21:39

I don't know who it is but it isn't a normal poster:

"Hello everyone, I'm new here - this looks like such a lovely community here, and I look forward to participating in many discussions here! I joined because I have a question to ask"

....

"do you think this is appropriate for a teacher to wear during school time?"

It's like an essay question or something the Matthew Wright show want to know!

Bowlersarm · 03/07/2013 21:42

Does it matter? I was quite enjoying it until you included my posts in a 'crock of shit'.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 03/07/2013 21:45

Until I read this thread I had no idea that bikinis were not considered proper wear for swimming by a significant proportion of posters. Hmm

DespicableYou · 03/07/2013 21:47

Keep enjoying it then bowlersarm, just because I think it's a crock of shit doesn't mean it shouldn't entertain you.

Bowlersarm · 03/07/2013 21:53

Oh well, I suppose it had run it's course anyway. There is only so much you can say on a particular topic, especially when the (fake) OP doesn't come back to argue.

Notcontent · 03/07/2013 22:15

How odd.
This would only make sense if the op's son was not used to seeing women wearing swimsuits or bikinis.

My dd is 7 but she is used to seeing people in all states of dress and undress - nothing phases or surprises her!

There's a difference between proper wear for swimming vs proper wear for teaching swimming. Again, practicality, if nothing else.

SweetSurrender · 03/07/2013 23:08

Actually, it's quite disappointing that I came back to check this thread, only to see an excessive amount of sarcasm and abuse.

To answer some points quickly before bed -

  1. How did he know what the bikini looked like? We did the common sense thing - we looked on Google and he showed me what (in his mind) it looked like.
  2. The teacher was also assisting the class and getting physically involved.
  3. I imagine she did look great in it and perhaps that's why my son noticed it to begin with. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if him and his friends were talking about it, to be honest. I don't want to question him further, but he was very specific about it "not being a swimsuit". When he has been used to instructors wearing very specific clothing, then it seems quite natural that he would question it.

I'm not judging one way or another, only that it seemed strange for the teacher to not wear something more practical. I'm sure most females know what it's like to 'fall out' of your bikini, after all.

BOF · 03/07/2013 23:12

But a bikini is a swimsuit.

Please tell me you aren't going to complain?

SweetSurrender · 03/07/2013 23:19

Of course not. I merely wondered if this was normal practice or not.

Goodnight :)

Dumpylump · 03/07/2013 23:20

Actually, I've never "fallen out" of a bikini.....what with buying ones that fit 'n' all Hmm

QuintessentialOldDear · 03/07/2013 23:23

I am generous:

BabiesAreLikeBuses · 03/07/2013 23:27

Did said teacher also pout and pose with hand gracing leg as per model?

Personally would just be jealous she could still get away with it!

MidniteScribbler · 04/07/2013 00:52

Good grief, we now have competition for the most ridiculous post I've ever seen on MN, and both on the same day on the same board.

I wouldn't wear that to teach students, because if I'm helping them, then arms and legs get tangled up. And when we're playing around at the end of class I'm likely to be bomb dived. Plus, I don't have the figure for it. But it really wouldn't bother me if another teacher chose to wear one (assuming it would fit!). But we live in a beachside community. If you don't want your child to see their caregivers, doctor, shop keepers or anyone else in a swimsuit, then you live in the wrong town. It's practically uniform during the hot summer months.

rootypig · 04/07/2013 00:57

I think it's far, far weirder that you sat looking at google images of bikinis with your 8 yr old son, than his teacher chose to wear one.

HTH.

adoptmama · 04/07/2013 05:05

Is it appropriate - of course. Why should it not be; there is nothing sexual or inappropriate about a bikini. It is a swim suit. Here is a great teachable moment for you with your son. You could discuss things like:

1 Women's bodies can be on 'display' in a bikini, regardless of size and shape. We all come in different shapes and sizes. They are all normal.
2 Explain to your son that any woman can wear any item of clothing they feel comfortable in; just because he is used to seeing swim teachers in one type of outfit doesn't mean there are not others that can be worn just as easily.
3 Whilst it is ok to notice differences, it is not ok to pass judgement just because it is different.
4 Instead of focussing on her clothing, praise the teacher to your son for having the desire to get in a pool with a class of 8 year olds instead of sitting on the sidelines watching. She sounds great. I hope my kids have teachers who are as involved in all their activities.

adoptmama · 04/07/2013 05:12

and barbiesarelikebuses - snort. I just choked on my coffee. Great post.

amazingmumof6 · 04/07/2013 06:09

I think when OP said "proper swimsuit" she meant a wetsuit. like surfers wear.

I have rarely seen swimming teacher without a wetsuit. our kid's teacher did wear a bikini top, cycle shorts and a t-shirt occasionally. I did not question her choices.

if I'm correct swimming teachers use wetsuits mainly to keep warm as they are in and out of the water all day. same as for other watersports.

but the class teacher is not a swimming teacher, the average person doesn't own a wetsuit.

I'm sure it looked unusual in a swimming lesson setting, but for a helper I don't think it was inappropriate to wear a bikini.

Grin @ some of the comments though.
