Private schools for boys near (enough) to Putney, SW London?

Hi everyone,

My youngest has a vomiting bug so I am stuck at home and I am trying to get things done (that I normally avoid like the plague!)

My middle son is an August birthday and he is in a pre-prep so I will need to move him at 7+ or 8+. Everyone round here talks about Kings School Wimbledon and Colet Court but I am conscious that these are highly competitive. Where else would people suggest I go and look at?

What's the journey like to Whitgift and Trinity?

Thanks! I went to JAGs myself so Dulwich College certainly familiar, it just seems like a long journey to do every day twice a day. Never even heard of Whitgift and Trinity!?

I would love to avoid the Common Entrance if I can but realise I am unlikely to be able to avoid it so happy to consider a prep. I would prefer him to be a day school pupil later on, so thinking those schools which feed into boarding schools might be a mistake?

Northcote Lodge in Wandsworth is a prep feeds into places like Dulwich, Harrow, Charterhouse and Marlborough

Thanks TweenageAngst - I'll have a look at their website. There are certainly boys from DS's pre-prep who head over that way each year. Do you know if it is another uber-competitive 7+?

When DS was little, I signed him up for Shrewsbury House. Anyone heard anything + or -? Thank you!

Northcote Lodge def not uber-competitive - lots of sport, there's Eaton House the Manor (sep boys and girls schools) but they have pre-prep too so don't know what place are like for 7 or 8+

Does it have to be a boys' school? As you could get to places like Newton Prep relatively easily and Thomas's Fulham (both co-ed)

There's no way I'd subject an 8 year old to the Putney-Dulwich journey twice a day, 5 days a week ...

KCJS and CC both very very hard to get into - whereabouts is your child in his class? If he's not comfortably at the very top academically I'd have several back up plans if you're planning to go down the KCJS/CC route

You can go from Putney to Dulwich on the Foundation coach service, so it's not like slogging across on public transport. And the great tradition of homework on the bus leaves time once home uncluttered.

And if coed is acceptable, then there's Alleyns as well.

What about Fulham prep ( coed, bus from Putney - lots use it), goes to 13 but lots do 11+ too. 13+ results to a wide range of day and boarding schools ( inc around 15 each year to top London days like Kings, Westminster, St. Paul's, Dulwich plus similar numbers to top boarding schools). Happy school.

Northcote - have heard some boys struggle to settle and have heard more than one story of bullying not being handled at all well by the school. Also vast majority go to boarding school. Very few to day school - 13+ school.

Eaton House - children well prepped for CE, but smaller year groups than the schools above so sport reputably not very strong. My jnderdtanding is that like Northcote it focuses on 13+.

Newton - new head in sept will hopefully restore its reputation which has fallen recently. No SEN to speak of. 11+ and 13+ preparation.

Willington in Wimbledon goes to 13+ - I think there is a bus. Also Donhead (although that only goes to 11).

In Wimbledon people also go to Homefield but that could be too far for you?

You could always rate them on the quality of the biscuits...

Biscuits is an important factor. Also rating them on how snooty the people on the phone are ;)

Willington in Wimbledon as greenspot suggested, from Reception to Year 8.

There isn't a school bus, but a local nursery provides wrap around care and drops off and collects Willington boys. If your son is clever they'll prepare him for Kings, if not they'll help find a suitable alternative! My DSs' love it!
