What books shall I buy to read to my 6 yr old daughter?

She loves the gruffalo & all the others similar, hungry catapillar etc but we now want to read "proper" books (even though she listens to the other younger books when I'm reading them to her sister who's 2)

So, bought Pippi Longstocking - but what else shall I get? She loves a story

My 5yo recently loved George's Marvellous Medicine. A few different Roald Dahl books have been published in A4 size with colour illustrations - it's a really good way to make the transition between picture books and big books :)

My friend gave her a couple of small Michael Morpurgo books for Xmas (something about winter, and 'I believe in unicorns' or something like that?) so we will be trying those soon.

Considering 101 Dalmatians as I found my dogeared copy (and she knows the movie), possibly some secret seven.

Am open to any other suggestions too :o

There is a new version of wind in the willows out, I think it's the full text but again with gorgeous illustrations - but I think the story might be a bit long/wordy for my DD so am resisting it for the moment!

'Daisy and the trouble with ...' books by kes gray. Dd loves them.

Roald Dahl were all big hits. Worst Witch, The Sheep Pig, The Owl who was afraid of the dark and The No 1 Fairy Detective Agency were big hits too with 6 year old DS1.

DD, only 4 is enjoying Peter Pan at the moment, the abridged Ladybird Classic version, probably because we've just seen it at the panto . I am more up with boys books but niece likes the Worst Witch and Milly Molly Mandy.

Pollyanna was my DGds favorite.

Anything by Jeremy Strong for a giggle or Dick King Smith for animal stories.

DH is reading the Hobbit to 6 yr old DS. Others he has read aloud recently include Charlie and the chocolate factory, Wind in the willows and assorted beast Quest stories.
Some nights DS wants a picture book read to him, other nights its part of a chapter book, depends on time and mood.

DD (6) has enjoyed listening to How to train your dragon by Cressida Cowell which I've been reading to her elder brother. It's not something I expected her to like, but she just joined in and surprised me. It's well written and so lovely to read aloud. Makes a change from the ballerina and fairy books...

Loads of Usborne abridged editions of classics.

My 6 year old, though, is bored silly by My Naughty Little Sister. I used to love it (in the 60s!) but she definitely doesn't.

DD has enjoyed Roald Dahl: James & the Giant Peach, Matilda, George's Marvellous Medicine, The Twits. Probably others that I've forgotton.

Enid Blyton: Secret Seven, Faraway Tree, The Naughtiest Girl in the School, Willow Tree Farm.

Also some non-fiction - she got the Wow! Everything book for Christmas, which is beyond her reading to herself atm but she's enjoying going over bits with DH. She also has the Usborne series of pocket science books, stuff like How Bees Make Honey etc - not that good for bedtime as they tend to generate lots of discussion!

She was given all the David Walliams books for Christmas too by her aunt (who seems to think she's about 10, not 5...) which we will read to her in the next few months.

My 6 year old loves reading naughty Amelia Jane, the worst witch, anything by Dick King smith and malory towers ( enid Blyton)

I second the Fudge books by Judy Blume and the Ramona series by Beverley Cleary. Also the Famous Five, Naughtiest Girl, Faraway Tree books by Enid Blyton.

Fancy Nancy books are great, not chapter books, but fun and good for building vocab.

Narnia series.

The Faraway Tree trilogy, all the Roald Dahl books. Just started reading The Children of Cherry Tree Farm & DH is reading DD1 the Secret Seven. I have Little House in the Big Woods which I can't wait till she is old enough to appreciate. She is 5 btw.

I agree with Hatchypom - Rainbow Fairies are incredibly popular in that short window of time (I think when they are 6) when they are about to move from picture books to chapter books and then self reading. They will numb your brain while you read them though!

DD loved Secret Seven. We bought her the whole series (or at least the first 12 books) in one boxed - good value - set. I read the first few to her and then she started reading them herself and were a huge success.
