We recently started at a new primary school and I was quite surprised at the 2.30pm finish. It's quite early isn't it? We start at 8.20am.

It's great in lots of ways as there's plenty of time for homework and afternoon activites.

PS the 8:45 is great as many parents are still able to drop off the children and get to work (those not working too far away of having flexible jobs where they can start a little later). I see many many dads dropping off in the morning.

Here children are in class for 25 hours a week - is it longer elsewhere?

GanglyGiraffe · 16/12/2012 17:51

Infants' School 8.50-3.00, however school doesn't officially start till 9.

Pyrrah · 16/12/2012 18:29

DD's is 9am - 3.15pm

My private prep was 8.30am - 6.00pm , plus homework. It was predominantly boarding so they needed to keep the little blighters busy - we had games every afternoon for 2 hours so lesson time was probably similar (although also had school on Saturday mornings).

seems we have a short day here in scotland..

9am till 3pm

dishwashervodkaanddietirnbru · 16/12/2012 18:35

I am also Scotland with hours 8.55am - 3pm

Rindercella · 16/12/2012 18:38

DD1 is in Reception. The hours are 8.30am - 4pm each day (slightly later on a Friday). She's normally knackered but happy when she comes home.

It's interesting that in England there is no set length to the school week - it's up to the governing body to decide.

In Scotland we don't have boards of governors and the Scottish government stipulates that children are in class for 25 hours a week.

In both countries, schools must be open for 190 days a year.

The primary school I work at starts at 9am has a 15 min break in the morning, 45mins lunch and finishes 3.20pm.(no afternoon break scheduled).

My children's secondary school starts at 8.30 has a 10 min morning break,45 mins lunch and finishes at 2.45pm.

Heifer · 16/12/2012 20:25

DD Primary starts at 8.30 and finishes at 3.25 - we get longer holidays though Grin

littleducks · 16/12/2012 20:29

We are 8.50 til 3.15 (reception) 3.20 (infants) 3.30 (juniors).

DontCallMeBaby · 16/12/2012 20:36

8.45 start for everyone, 3.00 finish for years R to 2, 3.15 years 3 to 6 - except the last day of the full terms, when everyone leaves at 3 (and it's horrendous).

Wouldn't want it any earlier, we are NOT morning people.

SandStorm · 16/12/2012 20:39

My school 8.45 to 3.05. DD school 8.55 to 3.15.

MissCellania · 16/12/2012 20:39

9.00 til 1.40 Junior and Senior Infants
9.00 til 2.40 1st and 2nd class
9.15-3.00 3rd-6th class

BieneMaja · 17/12/2012 20:44

8.50 to 3.15 here' but school day starts at 9 when the kids should be in class sitting on carpet. I start work at 9 but luckily work approx 8.5 minutes walk from school gate (not including dodging the squillion late parents on their way into the school)

OvOinAManger · 17/12/2012 20:51

8.50 - 3.15 Monday to Thursday
8.50 - 12.25 on a Friday.

I wonder if I'm near Grovee? Grin

mimbleandlittlemy · 19/12/2012 16:50

8.55 - 3.15. Used to be 3.30 but they shortened the afternoon play to finish 15 minutes earlier.

PeppermintCreams · 19/12/2012 21:21

8.55am (doors open 8.45) -3.15pm.

One of the other local schools has longer days Mon-Thurs then a half day on Fridays so the teachers can do planning.

Wigeon · 19/12/2012 21:28

Infants' school: 8:55am to 3pm. I'm sure one of the reasons it ends early is that lots of parents have children in the linked Juniors' which isn't on the same site, so the two schools have slightly different start / finish times.

I think my DD (Reception) would be even more exhausted than she already is if she had to stay til after 3pm!

ouryve · 19/12/2012 21:30

That sounds fine. 8:55-3:15 here - they have quite a long lunchtime.
