dd1 has to learn one by heart over half term and perform it afterwards. Any recommendations welcome!

Thanks

Sir Winter

I heard Sir Winter coming,

He crept out of his bed

and rubbed his thin and freezing hands:

'I'll soon be up!' he said.

'I'll shudder at the keyhole

and rattle at the door,

I'll strip the trees of all their leaves

and strew them on the floor,'

'I'll harden every puddle

that autumn thinks is his,

I'll lay a sparkling quilt of snow

on everything that is!'

'I'll bring a load of darkness

as large as any coal,

and drive my husky dogs across

the world, from pole to pole.

'Oho! How you will shiver!'

And then I heard him say:

'But in the middle of it all

I'll give you ....Christmas Day!'

My yr 3 dd loves 'road through the woods', also 'daddy fell into the pond' and 'faster than fairies'

When I was about 9 I memorized Macavity the Mystery Cat by TS Eliott. This is quite tricky though

Love this one by Alfred Noyes. Super build up and great for reciting out loud.

Daddy Fell into the Pond

Everyone grumbled. The sky was grey.
We had nothing to do and nothing to say.
We were nearing the end of a dismal day,
And there seemed to be nothing beyond,
THEN
Daddy fell into the pond!

And everyone's face grew merry and bright,
And Timothy danced for sheer delight.
"Give me the camera, quick, oh quick!
He's crawling out of the duckweed."
Click!

Then the gardener suddenly slapped his knee,
And doubled up, shaking silently,
And the ducks all quacked as if they were daft
And it sounded as if the old drake laughed.
O, there wasn't a thing that didn't respond
WHEN
Daddy fell into the pond!
