Silly question about book bags and what to bring on first day at primary school

Hello! My DD is starting school on Monday, and I'm really lacking information, especially about what to bring on the first day. In particular, does anybody know if most kids will already have their book bag on the first day? I am trying to contact the school to find out when I can go and get one but they are not answering - do schools tend not to open until literally the first day of term? Sorry about such basic questions but I'd be a bit sad if my DD was the only one to turn up on the first day not properly equipped!

My DD1 is starting school this year and they said they would give all the kids a book bag sometime before half term. So not needed for her first day. HTH.

Hiya, just spotted your message.

Don't fret about book bags or anything else on your DD's first day of school - whatever requirements, the teachers will let you know soon enough.

DD had her uniform obviously, a waterbottle and her pe kit which then stayed in the school until half-term.

The school gave parents the opportunity to buy everything before the Summer holidays apart from the book bag. That came when they had a "learn to read" parent evening and only then the children came home with it. That was rougly 3-4 weeks after the school started.

We had to buy the book bag at the info session at the school in July. I assume I have to send her with it on the first day but no one has said!

So do I also send her with the PE kit on the first day too?

I would have thought that the most important thing to take in is a set of spare clothes. Grin

At ours the PE kit gets asked for when they need it, and most just keep them in school and bring them home each half term for washing. I think we also got told in the newsletter when they had to start bringing a book bag each day.

We bought the book bag back in July. Don't know what we're supposed to put in it though. DD1 starts tomorrow and all that's in the bag so far is spare pants :o

We bought the book bag in July too. So far it has a water bottle in it and that's all.
I also want to know about PE kit- I can't remember what I did with ds1 cos it's too long ago! I though I might take it on the first day but make DH carry it so that he's the one that looks stoopid not me Grin

From my experience, wait until asked to bring in PE kit, I think most don't do it in first weeks/term. My DS went in with one all labelled, in a labelled bag, on his first day and it was never seen again!
