If you move after having been offered a place for Reception, - do you lose it? What happens?

We are in a catchment for a good school in a LA that has a shortage of places. We need to move house, but are unlikely to be able to do so before the application deadline or allocation date.

  1. Will dd keep her place if we move further a way?
  2. Will she keep her place if we change our address but move closer to the school and insead move to first place on waiting list?
  3. If she loses her place WHERE will she end up? - Far far away from her local school where they moved a cupboard to fit her in?

Has she got a place allocated at present that you have deferred, or are you applying this autumn for Sept 2013?

I think applications for 2013 don't close until about January so I would apply with new address if that will be in time.

If she has a place for this Sept that you have deferred you can keep the place wherever you move to, if you want. If you move during the application process I suspect you need to update the LA with your new address ASAP to make sure you get given the right school.

No, we have to apply by Jan 13, receive allocation by March and will be moving some time in June/July probably.

I am applying this time too for my December 08 baby Smile

AFAIK if you are given the place if say March/April and accept it, it's yours. If you then happen to move a few months later it's still yours. I assume you have been at your current address for ages? So it won't look like you moved temporarily just to get the place?

You will still need to give LA the new address ASAP because they may need to send you letters about settling in sessions etc which often start around July.

But they wouldn't be able to take the place back off you weeks/months later unless there was fraud.

In our LA, it's always been the address you're living at at the time of application that counts, even if you move subsequently.

In general an LA cannot take away your place after it has been offered just because you move. A few LAs require you to continue to live at the same address for a few months after receiving the offer, presumably in an attempt to stop people moving close to a school to get a place then moving away as soon as the offer is made. It is doubtful whether they are legally entitled to remove offers in this way. However, if you don't want to take the risk you should check your LA's admissions booklet carefully.

StarlightMcKenzie · 28/08/2012 13:26

The admissions booklet says that if you move house between Jan and September then You MUST inform admissions of your change of address.

No indication of what they intend to do about it though Hmm

Try looking on their website for "admission arrangements". If you aren't sure, feel free to PM me the name of the LA and I will take a look for you.

Thank you prh47bridge,

I appreciate it. We need to drastically reduce our spending so need to downsize but will hang on until after school place secured. We'll not be moving far hopefully as looking in surrounding roads so will probably still be in catchment, but don't wanna be stuck with no school or a long commute as won't be able to be at home to receive Ds off his SN taxi.
