Have you all heard how they did?

I haven't and I'm worried as I'm pretty sure dd is going to fail. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to know by now or not or if I'll be told at all

My DD is in yr 1 and have heard nothing about a phonics test and reports came out today with nothing mentioned about any tests. Did all yr 1's do this test?

mrz · 09/07/2012 18:40

If your daughter attends a state school she should have done the test

crazygracieuk · 09/07/2012 18:56

Had a letter from school to say that ds2 failed but so did 47% of his year.
The school has said that they haven't taught all the sounds for the test but I can't help feel Hmm as 53% managed to pass it.

peppajay · 09/07/2012 19:47

yes she is at a state primary and heard nothing just googled it and now and am really annoyed as nothing has been said to me or any of the other parents I have just asked. We knew nothing about it I asked my DD and she said a few weeks ago she had to do some writing with Mrs Davis in a different classroom and all my friends have asked their children and they have said the same. Bit shocked as our school is an OFSTED excellent over subscribed school and are usually really good. Right - I will be speaking to the teacher tomorrow!!

Feenie · 09/07/2012 20:41

No writing was involved!

You are right to ask - it's a statutory requirement to report whether children met the expected target or not.

Hulababy · 09/07/2012 20:42

Our Y1 reports come out on Thursday this week and include the phonics screening result mark.

peppajay · 09/07/2012 20:54

She said writing but was a few weeks ago now!! Just googled and read up on all the info, I knew absolutely nothing about these tests and just can't believe we werent informed. Not too worried as DD seems pretty much average but would like to know!!

mrz · 09/07/2012 20:57

peppajay the screening check took approximately FOUR MINUTES! It involved decoding 20 real and 20 pseudowords

peppajay · 09/07/2012 21:21

Just read up all the info so am a bit more clued up now knew absolutely nothing about it until I read this post. Will check with my DD tomorrow but the only test type thing she is aware of is what she called some writing in a different classroom with the other yr 1 teacher. None of my DD's classmates are aware of doing anything they can remember going to another classroom with the other yr 1 teacher that is all!! There is definetly a breakdown in communication here and something we are not being told!!

bronze · 09/07/2012 21:25

I didn't know about it from the school either peppa. I found out about it on here a few weeks ago. Still not recieved anything. My children are taxied so asking a teacher isn't very easy

Just got told she passed, but not the score.

ScallyFloss · 09/07/2012 21:33

We got my DD's report today but no phonics results. I am going to ask her teacher if we don't get them by the end of the week.

twolittlemonkeys · 09/07/2012 21:50

The school haven't sent out results but at DS1's IEP review today his class teacher told me he got 40 out of 40 :). Mind you, he could have passed it before he started reception so he is a bit of a freak of nature. I'm intrigued to know how his class did as a whole as there are 35 in there this year Confused

Salskey · 09/07/2012 23:10

Ds got 32 so passed and got 1c reading level. Is 1c ok mrz, he's made tremendous progress (reports said) and I was wondering if an IEP would continue for literacy with this score?

mrz · 10/07/2012 17:11

I would continue giving extra support to a child who has scored 32. A 1C is low for the end of Y1 but not worryingly so as long as the school are doing something to support him.

cantfindamnnickname · 10/07/2012 17:17

DS got full marks and I was told the same day but only because I was in school about my other child who is struggling.
We havent had official notification yet

EvilTwins · 10/07/2012 17:26

We got ours with reports at the end of last week. DTDs both got 39. Am intrigued to know if they got the same one wrong, being ID twins Grin

MrsJohnDeere · 10/07/2012 18:02

39/40. Told score in end of year report.

Quip · 10/07/2012 21:14

DS1 got 40/40 in end of term report. Bloody amazing given some of the reading books he's brought home are older than me, and none were phonics based. Credit where credit's due though, I did teach him phonics at home.

SmellsLikeTeenStrop · 10/07/2012 21:32

DD failed her phonics screening but DH and I got called in to see the teacher and told not to worry about it as they have no concerns with her ability. However, her report has her as slightly below national expectations for literacy.

She has struggled with reading, it clicked quite late for her and she stayed on the most basic reading books for a long time. This year she's been getting extra support in class and it has made a huge difference. I think I might just make sure she'll continue receiving extra support in Y2, as well as finding out if there is anything DH and I can be doing to support her.

Ismeyes · 10/07/2012 21:36

We were given results verbally today, DD got 40/40 too and asked for more to do geek child

UniS · 10/07/2012 22:44

had a letter. just said he had passed, no mark given.

Salskey · 10/07/2012 22:45

I just heard today a boy who's still on stage 3 and scored 35 got a level 1b but my Ds is stage 4 got 32 and has been given level 1c - do they compile scores and stages to produce levels? Confused seriously

MajorBumsore · 10/07/2012 22:48

Is that a 1c in reading only Salskey, or is it a level for literacy (ie including writing)?

AbigailS · 10/07/2012 22:53

To get the national curriculum level (i.e. the 1b or 1c) the teacher assesses more than just the phonic decoding. If you look at the APP guidelines (assuming the school uses them) many of the assessment strands are linked to comrehension and discussion / understanding of text.

Disclaimer - not denying phonics is crucial, just explaining how NC levels are reached!
