To Kumon or not to Kumon. That is the question.

DD is starting school in September. Below are the Pros and Cons I have been debating recently.

  1. She is bright, so should be okay without extra help in school
  2. It is too early to put her through this
  3. Kumon is expensive and time consuming.

The Pros

  1. It may give her that bit of extra confidence at school
  2. Earlier is better as then she can grow with that system
  3. Its not so expensive as to be prohibitive.

I really cant decide either way. Please someone help?

"Seeker why don't you let it go it's over with now."

Right. Because obviously I should just take the shit that's being handed out to me and accept it.

morethan - I would pass on your pity but my son is at his school, preparing for his solo at his school's end of year music scholars concert but I'll be sure to pass it on when I pick him up later.

we've read the posts including the ones MN deleted

clam · 19/06/2012 18:38

So, feenie, mrz, 2kids. You all finished your reports? I'm on the last 3 statements, hence wasting time dabbling on here! Grin

mrz · 19/06/2012 18:41

I've got targets for next year to add and one or two teacher comments to change but doing them on line isn't good for my MN addiction Grin

Feenie · 19/06/2012 18:42

All Maths to do and all my personal statements. Am further behind than I would normally be at this time of year, but 'tis all in hand. Smile

teacherwith2kids · 19/06/2012 19:05

Clam....everything written but complex jobshare merge / edit job to do once I get everything from the person who does the 0.3 part of my jobshare (trying to make two people sound like one is time consuming and a little stressful, especially when we have slightly different approaches to deadlines .....)

PooshTun · 19/06/2012 19:17

seeker - I have a 2ii university degree. It's nothing to write home about. Consequently I do not consider myself equipped to hand out advice to people asking about universities.

But if I were to do so and were you to point it out to me anyway I would not consider your comments to be 'vile'.

But then I am quite a confident and secure individual.

mrz · 19/06/2012 19:28

According to the on line report monitor I'm 92% complete Grin

seeker · 19/06/2012 19:34

PooshTun- quote of the week "But then I am quite a confident and secure individual."

so secure and confident that you get your kicks attaching a random stranger on th internet!!!Grin

Has mega bored actually come to a conclusion - or lost the will to live reading this?!

glaurung · 19/06/2012 19:37

The older ones don't start with counting dots round here. They always start a level or two below what they're capable of so they can whizz through the first couple of levels while getting used to the routine and to build confidence - this is a problem for children wanting to do complicated maths when their speed/accuracy isn't up to kumon speeds initially (which is unlikely) if it isn't explained to them that that's what they have to work on first.

Incidently the very high levels are good for proper maths (factorising quadratics and that sort of thing) - not rote stuff at all, but very few dc take it that far.

mrz · 19/06/2012 19:40

I'm thinking about using it philosophy tomorrow Smile

redglow · 19/06/2012 19:47

Teacherwith kids I didn't think you did come over as boasting. Your posts make sense. My argument on this thread has been about a four year old being pushed by an over anxious mum but that's just my opinion.

Then it all got of the subject with seeker keep mentioning the post that has been deleted that a lot if people did not see. Then someone else comming in and calling someone vile that's a bit strong like the op calling her four year old lazy because she does not want o do school work.

megabored · 19/06/2012 19:51

I believe this thread is becoming boring. It seems like you can take the girl out of school but cant take the... anyway!!

Thank you all for the insight into the world of parenting, and the good advise. I am sure our paths will cross on another thread.

Till we meet again.

exotic I have lost the will to read between all the squabbles!! :-)

However, between the squabbles, the views of everyone has been so enlighening to read. My opinion lies somewhere inbetween these thread. I like the approach from poosh and other 'pushy' in your face mums but I also appreciate very much views from seeker and in essence agree with them. There I will finish this post.

With respect redglow if someone made derogatory comments about your child you might feel a little upset too Hmm
