Hi all

How many uniform clothes should I buy for DD? The uniform consists of skirt and polo shirt/sweatshirt or trousers or pinafore/summer dress. How many of each sort do you think I should buy - bearing in mind DD is a bit messy and we don't currently have a dryer. Thankyou, it is our first time and I need some handholding!

With DC1 I bought 2-3 of everything except a blazer. By the first half term I had acquired a second receptacle for playground bark blazer to wear when blazer 1 was in the wash. By Christmas I had 5 complete sets of trousers/shirts and 3-4 jumpers.

Dc2 is a girl. Generally less likely to spend playtimes rolling on the floor, so I.thought, but she eats like a pig and paints a lot. Again, 5 of everything required.

I do wash most days, but with drying time and the time taken to put clean washing away factored in, with the cost of supermarket clothes and logo clothes from the second hand school shop - stress wise it's just been easier.

With DS I went for 6 pairs of trousers (come in packs of 2 from sainsburys), 4 sweaters and 5 polo shirts.

He has clean uniform every day but have a few of everything it saves having to wash and dry it every day or two.

I would start off with 2 jumpers, 1 skirt & 1 pair of trousers, plus 3-4 polo shirts. Then you can add more as you need it once you get started.
See if there is a second hand shop at school to get a cheap school dress because she will only wear it for a few weeks before the colder weather sets in, and unless you get one that is very Long it probably won't still fit your dd next summer.

sunnyday123 · 02/06/2012 13:01

i get dd 5 (supermarket) polo tops, 2 dresses, 1 skirt and 3 cardys each year.

SparkleandShine · 02/06/2012 13:14

3 trousers/skirts/pinafores
6 shirts
3 Jumpers

He has to have everything washed at the end of the day and 3 'sets' just about gets me through a week with stuff getting washed / dried.

If I had a DD starting today, I would say 2-3 shirts + 3 pinafores + 1 skirt + 2-3 cardies. My DD simply didn't wear shorts or trousers in reception. DS2 is a minging child who needs fresh shirt daily, other items & other DC only need 2 of each, but 3 makes life easier.

Actually, DS2 got thru all of reception with just one pr of trousers. He mostly wore shorts instead.

I have one winter uniform for my DD, ie skirt and jumper, although several shirts. She also has two summer dresses. One blazer, one set of PE kit.

lucysnowe · 02/06/2012 20:39

Thanks guys! I only just realised there was a v. similar question posted below :) I think as many as poss really to make it easier on myself. Maybe four/five polo shirts, two pinafores, two skirts, and three summer dresses? And a couple each of jumpers or cardies? Maybe I am going a bit mad now :)

I only can bear ironing once a week so I had a least 5 of everything - but had DS

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 02/06/2012 20:50

I have about 2 pinafores,3 skirts,2 trousers,3 summer dresses,8 shirts and 4 cardigans each for my DD's.

I was surprised at how often cardis are lost/left at school (and go missing for days on end...) and how dirty they can get (wiping noses on sleeves etc)

I know it seems a lot,but they are quite cheap in Sainsbo's etc, also I have hand me downs, and it just takes the stress off the washing/ironing change around.

propercheesed · 02/06/2012 22:06

I'm gonna sound like a proper skin flint now...but I purchased 2 sets of uniforms for my DS (jumpers, polo shirts, trousers). But then got a few bargain joblots off ebay so ended up with 6 full uniforms totaling £10(looked brand new) including postage...he is still using the trousers from last year!, its excellent I don't have to wash until sundays Grin

An0therName · 02/06/2012 22:10

propercheesed- my full uniforms were from 2nd shop at school/ebay -shorts and supermarket -

lucysnowe · 03/06/2012 10:43

Oh, I didn't think of ebay!

propercheesed you don't sound like a skin flint at all.

I regularly scour charity shops, jumbles, and the used uniform rail at school.

The last new cardigan I got was of course the one that disappeared, never to be seen again....(sod's law)

GobHoblin · 03/06/2012 20:12

I didnt know what to buy.. i ended up getting 1 school cardigan, 1 jumper and 1 school fleece. 2 skirts and 1 trousers. 4 polo shirts. The only thing i didnt really need was the school fleece, its only been worn a couple times.

anthonytrollopesrevenge · 03/06/2012 23:06

I bought 2 dresses, 2 pinafores and 2 pairs of trousers, 6 polo shirts and 3 jumpers. DD refused to wear anything other than the trousers throughout yr r. So I ended up giving the dresses and pinafores to the second hand club. But a polo shirt a dy was a good idea as she nearly always split lunch, paint or glue all over herself. And 3 jumpers was OK too.

If you don't like bleaching and scrubbing white socks to keep them white, buy grey. We can also buy bottle green socks to go with the green and Greg uniform and these look really nice and are so easy to wash!

anthonytrollopesrevenge · 03/06/2012 23:07

Greg! I meant grey

PerimenopausalMyArse · 04/06/2012 05:22

Wow, you all have a lot of uniform!

DD has two Summer dresses, and for Winter one pinafore and two blouses. She wears sports uniform twice a week so I have two polo shirts, one pair of shorts and 1 track suit for Winter.
