I'm feeling the need to chat to others about dc starting school in September - there are a few threads with tips about uniform etc, but I'd like a chinwag about it all too!

Anyone else?

missmapp: that's good to hear!

Destrier · 13/06/2012 21:45

RE struggling with buttons.

I read on another thread on here that they sewed up the button holes with teh button on top, then put velcro to fasten the shirt all they way down. It looks like a normal shirt, but fastens with just velcro.

Where are you all getting your name labels from?

Cuddler · 15/06/2012 12:32

Hi,my son is 4 and a half and will be starting at the local village school in September.I am a bit worried about him starting because the plan was always to home educate him,he is the eldest of 3 and i have another on the way due end of September. We have never had much of a routine or anything(which has worked for us-i know its not for everyone),and we planned to HE autonomously,so it will be a big change for him!

I feel a bit guilty about sending him to school, but having him,all of them,at home all the time is hard work sometimes and i think he would enjoy school, but i kind of feel like im taking his freedom away!School days are so long and theres not much time left over to spend with the family or pursue his own interests, but hopefully it will turn out OK and we can address those issues when we come to them. The school seems really nice,we were actually on the waiting list as we applied late but they offered us a place last week, after being on the list a month, which i hear is quite lucky as people can be on them for a long time.

Cuddler · 15/06/2012 12:33

Is anyone elses dc going part time at first? My ds will be 5 in March so he can go just mornings until then i think,i think i would prefer that.

missmapp · 15/06/2012 12:48

ds2 is doing mornings only for the first three weeks, then they all go full time.
DS1 was much more settled when he was full time, but they are all different.

Cuddler · 15/06/2012 13:42

When do they go home when they are part time?Is it after lunch?

missmapp · 15/06/2012 16:11

At ds2's school they go home before lunch, but I dont know if thats the same everywhere- it does make it quite a short morning.

elliejjtiny · 15/06/2012 17:25

DS2 is doing mornings (9-12) for 2 weeks and then mornings and lunch (9-1) for 2 weeks.

BornToFolk · 15/06/2012 19:15

Crap! Got the letter from the school today inviting us and DS to a meeting in the afternoon in early July but it's when DS and I will be on holiday. ExP can still go but I really, really wanted to go. I've not even seen the school yet! And of course, DS needs to have a look around and meet people too. I'm going to phone and see if we can visit another time but I'm very peeved to be missing the proper meeting.

BsshBossh · 15/06/2012 19:56

Back again, so hello! I bought uniform today. On the advice of a more experienced mother at the school with two DDs there already, she suggested I only buy one pinafore, one shirt and one sweatshirt cardigan (with school logo) in addition to the usual number of polos, tights, socks. DD hardly ever needs a change of clothes when she comes home from nursery and rarely drops food or paint on herself (or other children on her) but still - should I buy another sweatshirt cardigan and another shirt?

BsshBossh · 15/06/2012 19:57

one sk*irt, not shirt.

Cuddler · 15/06/2012 23:47

I would buy more than one even if they are not dirty they will still need washing after a couple of wears surely?I am going to buy as many as possible! But then i will have 6 peoples washing to deal with by then!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 16/06/2012 17:51

I've got all uniform except shoes and trainers now. Have 6 shirts but am going to change a pack to short sleeve to give dd1 a choice. Have 2 new pinafores plus a pinafore and skirt given to me by a friend. Also have 2 logo'd cardigans and 2 elastic ties. This is going to come in at around £250 after shoes....

simpson · 16/06/2012 21:47

A friend of mine dropped off some clothes that her DD has out grown and it seem to include a load of school uniform so I probably have more then I need!!

3 grey pinafore dresses, 1 grey skirt, 5 white shirts, 3 school logo ed cardigans, 3 summer dresses, loads of white socks, one tatty jumper ( was DS's but will do in an emergency!!) PE kit and bag and book bag!!!

Think that's everything apart from grey tights and her school shoes but her school shoes MAY come under prescription (from OT) so going to hold on those for the moment....

simpson · 16/06/2012 21:48

Oh forgot to say DD will get a school tie when she graduates from nursery and she will use DS's old one too as he will hopefully learn how to tie a tie properly this summer!!!

Cuddler · 17/06/2012 12:33

They dont have to wear a tie at ds' school,i had to and i was always rubbish at tying it so in the end i had an elastic one right up until secondary school!

I am going into town in a bit to get some bits for baby number 4 so will probably pop into Marks and Spencer too and see what i can get in there, sounds like i need to get cracking!

AdventuresWithVoles · 17/06/2012 12:40

Ooh! Why didn't I spot this thread before? DC4 starting school, so I should be an old hand, but still feeling wibbley. :)

ilovedarthmaul · 17/06/2012 21:59

Just marking my place! My DS starts reception in September - hes only been in school nursery 8 months!!! (August birthday) so will be the youngest in his year. I can't believe you have all got uniforms etc already! - We have a parents/induction evening soon so think we will get a uniform list then.

Am scared/excited & terrified all at the same time!

simpson · 18/06/2012 00:20

Iloved - my DS now yr2 was the youngest in his year when he started school and was rather worried about it, but he was fine!!

I only have uniform ready because I have inherited it from a friend!!! And also as DD as to wear a kind of uniform for nursery.

Cuddler · 18/06/2012 09:57

Well i ended up buying 3 pairs of trousers and a pair of shorts from M and S,and i got some white t shirts and navy shorts along with vests, pants and socks too.I know the school does sweaters and polos with the logo on and i think they have to wear those,so apart from a few other bits and a new coat and shoes i have made a good start!Ds came with me he wasnt impressed by the sea of grey!

Theas18 · 18/06/2012 10:08

Just to say how exciting for you all!

Mine are big now- 18/16/13 and we had no trouble at all- my worst memory is being the mum dragging the tantrumming just 4yr old tiny girl OUT of school at lunchtime on her 1st day. DD1 had a simply fantastic time and had no idea why she couldn't stay all day (having been used to full days at nursery).

The others obviously were desperate to go to "big school" like their elder sister. We arranged nursery to pick up and do the half day faffing and it was less traumatic (I wish schools could allow for kids that are used to a daycare setting and keen to get into school though- all of mine would have no problem with full days from the start)

AdventuresWithVoles · 18/06/2012 10:23

Cuddler ask if they can wear generic (no school logo) polos or jumpers, saves money.

Does anyone else not know yet who their child's teacher will be? We don't find out until 6 July. Also, it's likely (I am a snoop who figured it out) that DS3 will be in a mixed R-y1 class, but that won't be confirmed until July at earliest, too. I am pleasantly surprised by DS's cognitive progress recently, little slightly clever things he's done. Think he will be ready for school.

I am more worried about next yr's teacher for DS-current-y3, so reception thing is just curiousity. I think they always told us by now in the past, though. I think it's part of school's general plan to keep tight-lipped about other class teachers. Supposedly we will have home visits before end of term, too (no word on that until July, either). Intake size = 45, so a lot of visits to organise at short notice(?)

BsshBosh DS2 got thru Reception with ONE pair of trousers & otherwise wore shorts, so maybe you'll manage; you have to be willing to sponge down any spots or marks or spilled food with a sponge & hang it up to dry overnight (we have an airing cupboard). DD is y5 & manages to wear the same outfit all week without getting mucky or needing even a sponging down.

CMP69 · 18/06/2012 17:34

Hi All
DS (PFB and only one!) will be 4 at the end of July and starts reception Sept, he will be really little!
Uniform shirts and sweatshirts from school are logo'd do I buy all these or should I do some of theirs and some plain ones??
We got out 3rd choice school, but it is just up the road, I think (fx) I have a child minder sorted for the 3 days I work, so i feel reasonably organised, must get on trousers and socks asap.
Can't believe thay make littlies wear ties - mad!
Glad we are all in it together C :)

PoppyWearer · 18/06/2012 17:46

Marking my place too, DD (DC1) will be 4 at end of July and starts in September.

A the moment she seems quite excited as she has been at nursery since 6mo and will be going to school with a few nursery friends. We drive past the school most days and she is always fascinated to see the children (or "my new friends" as she calls them) and speculate about what they're doing.

I was on a uniform thread a few weeks back and have Done The Uniform Shop, save for the embroidered bits. I got a mix of age 3-4 and 4-5 from Tesco and M&S, it was all cheaper than I'd feared.

Still waiting for our first parent meeting and am already peed off about the soft/staggered start thing.

HippoPottyMouth · 20/06/2012 19:03

Hello!
My DD is also going to be a young one, she turns 4 on 27 August. I think she'll be ok though, she is used to nursery 3 times a week and seems quite excited about it. She's going to a small school too, only 20 in the class so should be ok.
She has a settling in session tomorrow which is quite exciting! We should get uniform list then and I can start on the shopping! V pleased to see you can get non iron school shirts these days :o

Bit annoyed to get a letter yesterday inviting us to a meet the teacher (will only be with current kindy teacher tomorrow) thing next week though, short notice and we are on holiday :(
Oh well, not the end of the world I guess.
