"Dress up as a famous athlete" - any ideas??

DCs have got to dress up as a famous athlete during Oympic week at school. Aside from sticking on a Daley Thompson moustache, I'm pretty stuck for ideas. It's a way off, but I'm trying not to leave it until the last minute (as usual!). Any suggestions gratefully received!

clopper · 01/05/2012 19:05

fake moustache, wig, shorts and 118 on a card stuck to their front!

dizzyday07 · 01/05/2012 19:07

Do they do any sports that they have "gear" they can use?

Horse riding = Princess Ann
Black glove and running gear = Jesse Owens
Swimming cap + medals = Mark Spitz
Boxing Gloves = Ali

Mopswerver · 01/05/2012 19:11

Don't suppose your DC's will have heard of him but "Eddie The Eagle"?

choccyp1g · 01/05/2012 19:12

Shorts round ankles = Paula Radcliffe
Running gear = Usain Bolt
Bare feet = Zola Budd (showing my age)

2madboys · 01/05/2012 19:17

One of mine wore a rugby shirt from our local team with a printed out name on the back and the dreadlock-style wig he had for pirate assembly. Went as his favourite Samoan rugby player Grin

RoxyRobin · 01/05/2012 19:17

Zola Budd - no shoes, and gets to trip her classmates up!

RoxyRobin · 01/05/2012 19:19

x-post

Also Flo-Jo: very long, intricately painted nails

Would the Paula Radcliffe one get to poo on the classroom floor?

SuePurblybilt · 01/05/2012 19:22

That's a really silly costume day, won't they all just be in sports kit? Grin
Eddie the Eagle?

GrossePopel · 01/05/2012 19:22

John McEnroe? Curly wig, headband and tennis racquet?

Flubba · 01/05/2012 19:23

Rebecca Adlington - swimming cap and dressing gown (cossie underneath, unless it's a different sort of party Wink ) ?

Oops, sorry, just read it's for your DCs - scrap that! Blush :o

SardineQueen · 01/05/2012 19:24

That is a really poorly thought out costume day!

Saltire · 01/05/2012 19:31

The school I go to with mindees had that same choice for dress up day, and the little girl in a wheelchair went as Dame Tanni .

Get0rfMoiLand · 01/05/2012 19:35

I just came on to say Flo Jo with long fake nails but someone got there first goddammit!

defineme · 01/05/2012 19:37

My ds age 7 went as idowu the Gb triple jumper who dyes his hair so he went in athletics vest and shorts, football socks, trainers and I dyed his hair with the spray on red silly spray you can get, we pinned a name sign on him, he also wore his toy gold medals and draped a union jack we had round his sholuders.

DD went as Rebecca Adlington with name sign, tracksuit, swimsuit, google, swim hat , medals and union jack.

dearprudence · 01/05/2012 19:40

If you have a pantomime horse outfit, they could go as Red Rum.

Eric Liddell. White shorts and tshirt or polo shirt. Make a gold medal to wear round the neck.

foxeeroxee · 01/05/2012 19:56

Dd's school did a 'famous sportsperson' fancy dress for sports relief. Majority of kids turned up in pe kit....dd turned up in brand new England kit, that fucking oh bought her especially for the day Angry
Poor kid, when she announced she had dressed up as Kelly Smith nobody had a clue who she was on about.

itsraininghens · 01/05/2012 20:23

some great ideas, thanks so much!
Now need to work out how I can make some Flo-Jo nails...

One black leather glove and their PE kit
Show them a pic of Jesse Owens stance with one fist in the air.
Teach them a bit of politics whilst you're at it!

Or make a fencing mask with a cardboard box and dress them in white
Wear their karate kit (actually its Judo in Olympics)

There's a diver who has Olympic rings tatooted on his chest ?
Weight lifter in dressing gown?

Mopswerver · 02/05/2012 14:38

dearprudence has to be the winner with Red Rum Grin

learnandsay · 02/05/2012 14:47

Full bottle of Vodka, Paul Gasgoine.

JustOneMoreQuestion · 02/05/2012 14:51

Jane Fonda!
My kids had to dress up for sport relief, my dd and her friend dressed up as Jane Fonda and Olivia Newton John, pink/purple leggings, legwarmers with a swimsuit on top, a belt, a little bolero and a sweat band over the forehead, they looked AMAZING, and were the talk of the school! :)
They had a fantastic time all week planning it and sorting out what to wear
