Primary school places shortage in Winchester - How far do you have to go?

Sorry if this is a really stupid question but my DDs are 2.5 & 9 months so I have no experience of the school thing!

My catchement school is massively over subscribed so even though we live really close by, if things carry on as they are it looks like we might well not get our DD in.

As far as I understand it, all the primary schools in Winchster are, or are on the vergre of being, over subscribed - so what happens if you don't get in anywhere? How far are you expected to travel to a school with a space?

Has anyone had this experience and where did you end up?!

Would love to hear any info or advice...
