Primary school places !!!

Is anyone getting nervous for the primary school places next week? It's all I can thunk about now , the 18th simply can't get here soon enough , I would be happy if my DS got any of his 3 choices but does anyone have any idea of his chances if getting in one of them if they are all within a radius if one and a half miles from our home. My ideal choice would his first choice which is a catholic school which is 0.6 miles from home but is always oversubscribed, we attend mass every week and had all forms signed by the priest etc but don't know how much of a chance he has if getting it , any advice would be great as am worrying alot now the date is getting nearer.

Thanks for reading and sorry for rambling xxx

Have any of you with just 4 yr olds, who haven't got the schools they wanted, thought about deferring their admittance and going on to a waiting list?

issyocean · 19/04/2012 10:00

Sorry should have read the whole thread before posting Blush

I feel for the North Londoners, we moved out of the area last year as we just knew that it was such a scamble for primary AND secondary schools and bar selling a kidney, could never afford private. We moved to Richmond borough so didn't exactly make life easier for ourselves!

We got second choice, because of a change in primary school set ups round here (a junior and infant school both becoming two form full primary). DS is at the nursery of our first choice school and has made friends, it's an outstanding, etc. But even though he would be in the first ever class of infants at choice 2, I really like the head and the more inclusive feeling the school had. Will probably still go on waiting list for school 1....

I can't see though how RIchmond council's sticking plaster approach to primary school places is ever going to create the hundreds of extra places needed every year. The sibling thing is ridiculous, DS was the only non sibling in a nursery intake of 62!

Oh and designerbaby I think I remember you from a 'Crappy Homerton births' thread I was on years back! Assume you've come South West too? I hope your school situation sorts itself out.

Peachy · 19/04/2012 10:21

Sunnyday it probably is better, we did want him to attend the other village school but they are very over subscribed so we were not given permission to apply- no point as out of catchment and local school under subscribed. Local fantastic if you are academic- faith school, really old, etc- but having put 3 boys, 2 with Sn, through there already there was both history and a feeling that ds4 wouldn't cope (some speech problems). Never mind, at least we have a school!

designerbaby · 19/04/2012 10:23

Hi Lamader,
Yes I remember you too! How are things?

While Homerton wasn't the reason we moved, the more distance I put between myself and that place the happier I am!

RE: Schools ? we're sorted, just £112k+ poorer...

OUCH. AGAIN. No matter how often I say it, it doesn't get any less painful...

I am in the middle of a huge row with our LA, regarding Schools Admissions, I am prepared to simply not send DC to school, they are fully aware of the complexities of our situation, however because our problems dont fit into a "box", then they arent prepared to even consider them.

I'd like to see them explain why they chose to ignore such serious matters to a tribunal.

lifeistooshort · 19/04/2012 10:37

oh crap we just found out the results. Normally according to the criteria we should have been first pick for our school but we didn't get in. Now I guess we appeal. Any one with experience yet?

I got another email saying that as I didn't get my first choice, about 10 schools in herts have opened an extra class and I could put ds2 onto these lists if I want. I'm lucky as my second choice is my closest (it's not the best in the area, that was my first choice, but 2 mins walk)) and the school that's opened an extra class is where he currently is, but it's 3 miles from here. So I'm sticking with our 2nd choice.

I don't have any experience myself but my SIL has appealed when her DD didn't get their first choice (she was gutted, floods of tears and all - poor thing).
She won the appeal.
I say appeal and fight it as much as you can.
Good luck to everyone!

lamandler · 19/04/2012 10:46

We are good db, went through childbirth again at UCH so it's true what they say about hormones=short memories!

Have got used to being constantly broke since moving and having 2 DCs so while it seems like a lot of money now I am sure you will cope - you and your DH don't need two kidneys each do you? Wink

We don't find out until friday (somerset). I only put down 1 choice for DS2, it's the school DS1 goes to, nearest school, 1.5 miles away ofsted satisfactory. Next nearest school and our catchment school is in a remote village up a busy winding road with no pavement and I didn't fancy doing that on foot with children and a buggy. Next 2 nearest are always over subscribed. Next nearest after that is about 5 miles away.

DS1 got into first choice easily and there is only 15 children in his year. There have been a lot of new houses built since then though so I'm a bit nervous. Don't know what I'll do if he doesn't get in as I can't drive so can't really do 2 school runs or get them both to a school further away than the one DS1 is at. Also DS2 is a wheelchair user just to complicate things further.

confusedperson · 19/04/2012 11:23

MrsCarriePooter, are you me? I also got my 2nd choice, a nice school but inconvenient location. Will have to juggle it somehow..

HalleLouja · 19/04/2012 11:49

Sparkly I live in one of those places and have friends who currently have no school place as they have to wait until continuing interest. It's a joke. Luckily we live right by one of those schools so got in. We also put another not so popular but really good school as our third choice. So would have got that even if we didn't get the local one.

SparklyGothKat · 19/04/2012 12:18

Well I'm well confused. Got letter today. Says
Rank 1 school 1,370.28 meters rule 6 nearest to school

Rank 2 school 290.74meters rule 5b nearest c/vc school not multiple birth

Rank 3 school 2691.30meters rule 4 siblings agreed yes. (even though dd2 who is at this school lives with her dad and I put this on application) surely we should have been given this school as the rule is higher or do I have that wrong??

simpson · 19/04/2012 12:29

DD got her letter today to say she has got our first choice school Smile

SparklyGothKat - You're quite a way away. You may have fallen into the higher category but if they've got a high number of siblings they won't be able to take them all and will have used distance from school (I assume) as the tiebreaker within that category.

SparklyGothKat · 19/04/2012 12:49

We got the second school which I'm fine with. Dd2 is only at the school further away as that was the only school that had places when we moved here and could take my older 3. The older 2 have moved onto secondary school now. Just wondering how I will be at two schools on a Friday when I pick up dd2 for the weekend lol.
