Primary school places !!!

Is anyone getting nervous for the primary school places next week? It's all I can thunk about now , the 18th simply can't get here soon enough , I would be happy if my DS got any of his 3 choices but does anyone have any idea of his chances if getting in one of them if they are all within a radius if one and a half miles from our home. My ideal choice would his first choice which is a catholic school which is 0.6 miles from home but is always oversubscribed, we attend mass every week and had all forms signed by the priest etc but don't know how much of a chance he has if getting it , any advice would be great as am worrying alot now the date is getting nearer.

Thanks for reading and sorry for rambling xxx

Sunnyday123 - I have no idea what will happen to siblings in the coming years....I guess siblings will be split up??! Unless the birth rate goes down...I don't know.

I don't have another child and we will probably move in the next year so at the moment it is not something I need to worry about.

sunnyday123 · 18/04/2012 21:14

gleemama - im monday, you?

GirlsInWhiteDresses · 18/04/2012 21:17

designerbaby - that school sounds like a shocker.. A head that thinks children shouldn't learn to read by reading? Unbelievable..

lucysnowe · 18/04/2012 21:18

Hey roadkillbunny well ironically I don't think I now want our first choice, which is oversubscribed luckily. The second choice is a big one we're just out of catchment with, so hopefully will get in. BUT there seemingly has been a massive baby boom in our part of the world (I remember when I first went to visit the midwife with DD her diary was already full of due dates!) so it may be a bit dicey. And yes, well done to all who've got what they want and kit and others, I really hope you get the schools you want in the end.

chopchopquick · 18/04/2012 21:19

Yes we are Herts. I live in an area that falls into a "no mans land of school places". Last year we had a battle to get our child into a reception place and eventually got our 6th nearest school all be it not one we wanted our child to go to. This year our second child is due to start in reception and we got allocated the same place as our first child. As much as I would prefer a different school I need to be grateful as other children in the roads in our "no mans land" were offered their 15th nearest school and not the most desirable of schools. Disgraceful. It looks like the problem is wide spread, I hope you get something sorted kit.

Weddellway · 18/04/2012 21:21

I'm with you designerbaby. We have done exactly the same.

naturalbaby · 18/04/2012 21:40

2nd choice for us, but still a good one.

There seem to be a lot of others with independent school places as back up? We're going to keep his private school place and try again next year with ds2. If he was 10months older he would have got into our 1st choice but there seems to have been bit of a baby boom in 2008 - 2 set of twins and siblings took all but 4 places.

curiousparent · 18/04/2012 21:42

lucysnowe I don't want first choice now either and so if we do scrape through there we intend to go on wait list for 2Nd place instead. Hope you get your revised preference!

Local authority HAS to find a school place somewhere for your child, they can't legally leave you without one come September. But it might be in a neighbouring borough....

It's a shambles really, isn't it? How can they not know how many children are likely to need places? Surely the data is there to make use of???

chouilla · 18/04/2012 21:47

Good evening everybody ang congratulations to all who managed to have their choices fulfilled. I am in Haringey borough and we have been given a school (Risley Avenue) that was not listed in my 6 choices. I put Lancasterian which is 0.3442m from home. I'm gutted, annoyed, pissed off, well I can't even find anymore words to describe my total disappointment. Teh school is very badly rated and also scores badly on exams.
What puzzles me is that in the eadmissions site when you go to the "view the outcome of your application", they state that my son has been offered a place at Risley Ave school then further down they write that "We have been able to allocate a place at one of the schools named on your application form".. But the school offered has never been on my list ! Anybody in the case? I am still hoping this is a bad dream and that when I receive the letter tomorrow, I would have been given my 1st preference. Good luck to all of us especially the ones who have not been offered a place. I will definitely appeal.

ubwlondon · 18/04/2012 21:47

Oxford(shire) here too - any ideas when the emails are going out on Friday? Chance of getting dd into one of the good state primaries nearby about as high as a lottery win. But then some people do win the lottery every week...

afussyphase · 18/04/2012 21:50

4th choice! It seemed ok I guess, and Ofsted says it's 'good' but you can kind of tell that a lot of that is that the inspectors were stunned that they could get the standards up to 'just below average' by year 6 given the dire circumstances blah blah blah. Our first choice seemed sooooo nice :( Have to hope for waiting lists I guess.

FreudianSlipper · 18/04/2012 21:51

i am getting all confused :(

do we have to appeal directly to the school or through the council even if the school is not in your borough?

i wish i had never put down my 6th choice (that we got) i am so angry with myself too Angry

UmYeahLikeTotally · 18/04/2012 21:51

We got our first choice! Smile

Glittertwins · 18/04/2012 21:55

We got that on email this evening SchoolsNightmare. Something about the extra places? We aren't Watford, but having twins in Herts certainly worked in our favour.

Bessie123 · 18/04/2012 21:56

Shit, dd offered a place where 4% of children have English as a FIRST language. Private school it is, then.

ouch for kitsilano. THAt sucks

really gutted to see so many let downs

welovesausagedogs · 18/04/2012 22:24

Just thought i would mention that you local authority does not have to offer you child a school place till a month after their fifth birthday as that is when they legally have to be in school.

Hodel · 18/04/2012 22:30

I didn't get a place anywhere either... despite being totally sensible and listing all nearest ones + the ones we would have gotten a place in last year. I'm in Hackney, London. Really shocked.

naturalbaby · 18/04/2012 22:33

Both schools on my list added a place for twins.
chouilla I couldn't make anything out of our email but the letter was really clear about what had happened/why/what to do next.

Pmoz · 18/04/2012 22:37

I live 0.63 from my first choice and got my fourth choice !!! North London sucks

Bessie123 · 18/04/2012 22:37

hodel you are near me. Which end of Hackney?
