Hi, I used to encourage the boys to write and read by choosing subjects that would appeal to them but not just in english lessons in class i.e. history of favourite football club when doing timelines in history. Go through the school library with them and introduce them to books you enjoyed as a child as they will like the link to you. Discuss with school what book budget is spent on as there are some very good books for boys (as much as I hate spliting books by sex), do they have comics, cartoon strips etc?, many younger boys prefer non fiction especially if it is a bit nasty i.e. lots of people dying on a sinking ship, pharoes casting spells in afterlife etc
