RhinosDontEatPancakes most books for young children only have one short sentence per page.

I went into my room and saw the c*t. It was small, white and very beautiful.

so we guess from the initial and final sound and if we can't then we guess from the illustration (if there is one) Hmm wouldn't it be easier to actually read the word?

WittyTitle · 06/03/2012 21:25

Clearly my mind is warped by years of foul language every time I see the example c*t I don't think oh cuts or cats Hmm

mrz · 06/03/2012 21:40

I was thinking cot Wink

WittyTitle · 06/03/2012 21:47

I didn't even think of that pmsl

most books for young children also come with pictures mrz.. which again makes it obvious what c*t would be.

Ah, but sadly for the guessers, many decodable books now come with pictures that don't offer any clues to the words.

In answer to CecilyP:
?How can I process all the sound-spelling correspondences in familiar words in milliseconds and those in unfamiliar words in ? well, seconds, I suppose??
Because when you come across an unfamiliar word, you will of course slow down and process it sound-by-sound, spelling-by-spelling. Here?s another analogy: driving a car. Mostly, because you?ve overlearnt all the skills, you don?t even have to think about them when you?re driving because the process is automatic. What happens though when you see a potential danger in front or you are confronted with an unusual situation? You switch on your conscious attention to what you?re doing and start focusing on speed, being in the right gear, covering the brake, etc.
?... would we not have to process every word on the page to dismiss it before we come to our chosen word??
No, you wouldn?t. Not if you?ve been taught how to scan, that is, because in this case you are only looking for a particular spelling pattern.
On your third point: this is perhaps true, though instead of ?reading? the name, you skip it and tell yourself mentally that it?s that name again. However, this depends on how important it is for you to want to read the name precisely. Even then, you may well not pronounce it properly ? cf Sarkozy.
On the fourth point, you?re right! When we see the word ?Taoiseach?, we say the word. But, we?re not really ?reading? it in the sense that we are talking about - i.e. processing it - unless we have the code knowledge that Mrz was suggesting. We say the word because we know what it is and what it means. If anyone were to try and read it, without knowing the word, they would probably end up pretty flummoxed.
