hello there everyone...
i did put this post else where, but got no response,
i hope someone can help me here.
my ds is 7,and just 3 weeks ago got diagnosed with mild ADHD,
over the last 2 and a half years of school we have being called in several times over his behaviour,
with them saying hes troublesome, challenging, disruptive etc.....
we had a parent evening, were the teacher was very positive, saying hes doing very well, although she can see hes gone from above average to average/just below average, she said he is disruptive and struggles threw each part of the day,(morning, lunch, afternoon!)
im guessing hes still trying to be class clown...
she told us that they have to get a one 2 one in for him when hes abit more hyper, and that is normaly around 2-4 times in a week, for an hr to a whole afternoon.
i asked the teacher if he could do with having his own 1-1 ta?
teacher said
1:dont go there.
2:if theres 1-1 available in the school then we can use them.
3:hes not that bad.

so what do you guys think?
if he does need 1-1, then how do i go about it?
what if the school says no?
ds is changing his school next year,he goes into middle school,
thank you xxx

yes of course i understand.
he thought they were going to tell me he had aspergers, the pead said theres no way he has that,
he has only seen a pead, not CAMHS?
(i wish i knew more)
i know at school he wont let anyone touch his chair, and hes the same at home about where he sits, but again,a year ago it was alot more then a chair,it was everything, almost OCD,again the pead said no,it wasnt ocd,
he would have his shoes in perfect order, teddies, cars, they were a nitemare,he would have to button his shoes 3 times, flush his pants down the loo cause they were dirty!he had to go 1st in everything!
but we have none of that now, just the chair and going 1st,and carpet space at school,
how do i get in touch with CAMHS?

OP posts:
mrz · 27/11/2011 15:22

I would probably ask for a CAMHs referral if I was in your position if only to rule out/confirm aspergers and OCD

crazygal · 27/11/2011 15:23

i will do that, thank you xxx

www.ipsea.org.uk/What-you-need-to-know/Common-problems.aspx

there is often an overlap or shared symptoms between conditions or a child has a combination of conditions which is why ASD is diagnosed by a group of different professionals for example

I agree with Leonie - School are not going to give you 'proper' advice as they've already decided he doesn't need a Statement, so they'll be quite content to 'contain' him until he leaves for the next school.

Definitely see your GP and ask for a referral to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Team (CAMHS) - these have the Clinical Psychologists etc that ca start diagnosing him correctly. I agree with Leonie - the behaviour you've described is also ASD-like.

You should also apply for a Statement yourself - forget what school tells you, they just want to save money / effort.

There's a model letter on how to request an assessment that may lead to a Statement directly to the LA at www.ipsea.org.uk

Finally, you'll get lots of advice if you post on the SN Board rather than in Talk.

yes thank you all for your help here!!
ive made an appointment at the dr.
thats at 10 this morn,im armed with videos too.
im going to ask for a referral to CAMHS.
i have posted this on sn,and have had a few replies on there, people there mainly think he should be getting alittle more 1-1 support.

arrrrrrrrrrrgggggghh!!
ahhhhh,ok,just been to the dr.showed him some video footage,
he agreed that ds outburst was abit extreme, but thought it was just a temper tantrum, and that i should go in with a different approach!!
i told the dr. that i have reward charts up,we are very positive with him,and he gets conseqenses for hitting or being defiant,
i told him we give him 1-1 mam or dad time most eves,
i told him i get 2-3 children a week from his school around so i can do supervised playdates and to teach him how to play.
i told him ive done courses and read books.
i told him hes hitting children at school, hitting there face and that parents have complained,
and that when i dont answer his questions etc he gets aggressive,
the dr.said he dosent need a referral to camhs, but he would get a family support group involved so i could tackle it all in a different way....i could cry,
i really feel im doing everything possible at home.
i just dont know!
what do i do now?
except that and see what they have to offer?
i know the group hes talking about, ive done basic parent course with them a year ago.and that was good.which i told him,
the dr. thinks ds has a behaviour problem rather than aspergers.
and i dont think this group will be able to diagnose,im not sure.

wasuup3000 · 28/11/2011 12:41

Health Visitor. Go to GP again or call them, say you have had a think and you want him to refer your son to Camhs. If he refuses ask for that refusal in writing. Use different GP if you have to. Be insistant.

crazygal · 28/11/2011 13:03

ohhh ok....

im waiting for the parent partnership to call me back too.
thank you x

when was his last paed eval, crazy? the paed seemed to be on board, maybe you should go back to him/ her? when is his next follow up with that paed? (the one who originally said mild adhd?)

fwiw, our paed (the fourth, lol Grin) says ds1 isn't aspergers, just adhd (inattentive and a little on the hyper side, but no behaviour issues). he's having full psycho-ed assessment next month as we've had approximately 6 years of as/asd/odd/add/adhd maybe maybe not etc etc.

i'm expecting a full psycho-ed eval of ds1 to say add predominantly inattentive, but with a dash of hyperactivity and aspergers type traits.

you could always go private if you don't get any further with either health or ed, but it may be more difficult to get them to listen to a private dx later if they have both ruled it out. so you might be looking at applying for sa yourself, and following it all the way through to tribunal.

unfortunately you are finding out the hard way that nothing will happen unless you do it yourself.

mrz · 28/11/2011 18:10

My son's first paed said he's seen worse Hmm then my husband died and they put his problems down as grief so it took 12 years to get a diagnosis from two psychiatrists

crazygal · 28/11/2011 19:31

i seen the pead around 4 weeks ago and thats when she gave me the dx,she did say in there that threw out the last few visits they were wondering about aspergers, but said she felt confident now to say that there was none there,
my next appointment with her is 1st of may,
madwoman i think your right,im going to find all this out the hard way!
mrz im so sorry to hear you went such a long time without a diagnosis! that must have been very stressful on top of loss of your husband,
i certainly dont want to go that far down the road and not have some help!
leonie i was ready for anything today!! but no one got back to me :(
however tomorrows another day,and ill make all the calls again then :)
