DS (YR) came home today with 2 scratches across his cheek.

He said another boy did it in the playground and it was on purpose. He doesn't know who. He says he did not tell his teacher and presumably it went unnoticed. I'm a bit concerned, particularly as he came home a couple of weeks ago saying another boy had put leaves down his pants. I don't want to be overly precious and I know kids mess around at school but this is a bit worrying and I don't know whether I should raise it with the school or not.

I am working tomorrow so not doing the school run and won't see his teacher. Should I ring the school and ask for his teacher to call me back to discuss it?

There is nothing his teacher can do if he does not tell the playground supervisor. So it would be best to instil in him that he has to tell a playground supervisor if something like that happens straight away so he can point out who has done it and appropriate action can be taken.

Ok thanks. So you think no point raising it with his teacher at all? I kind of want to point it out to her, even if there's nothing she can do about it. Not that I mean I think it's her fault; these things happen. But I'm surprised no-one seems to have noticed it.

I think it is fine to have a word to the teacher so that they can ask play ground supervisors to keep an eye on your ds to see if anything going on.
You can combine that with encouraging ds to talk to supervisor/ teacher if hurt/worried.

I don't know your ds of course but with my dd I always err on the side of caution and would only speak to the teacher if she really was very upset or quite hurt or it happened every other day. She has come home with scratches, bumps, odd bruises a few times since starting reception but is vague about what happened. I did ask her one time and she seemed to suggest one of her classmates did it but when I asked some more it appeared that they were digging for treasure (of course) in the bushes (where else) and the scratch on her cheek was quite accidental...

Yes I agree BabyG! That's why I wasn't sure whether to just leave it or not. But they are quite nasty scratches so I think I will mention it.

If they are nasty I would definitely mention it and also tell them your ds was upset. At the very least they should keep an eye out for him at play time. Poor little thing. They are so grown up to go to school, but really still babies...
