its Y1 - last year was reception/foundation - do they not send newsletters home - ours say Y1 newsletter
its normally fairly informal the first one of the year
is there anything you have concerns about -

ask about how he is progressing with phonics, reading and writing, is there anything you can do to help

I would ask whether he's settled well into the new year.
Maybe a bit about progress in reading, writing and numeracy if I was concerned and the teacher hadn't already volunteered the information.
Have a look at his work and round the classroom.
