Should a 5 year old know the months of the year?

A discussion with our 5 year old today has proved to us that she has no idea of the order of the months in the year. She starts year 1 tomorrow. We've talked about what months certain things happen in, but not the order as such IYSWIM. Are they taught this at school specifically? Or has she already been taught it and just forgotten?

My dd6 knew them at that age, she made a calendar at school one Xmas and has been ticking off the days ever since...

DD was taught it in reception, they used to sing a song and she'd come home singing it. They also had one for the days of the week. I think she did have some idea of the months before then but probably not in the right order.

My son learnt them through song in Yr 1.

Im a Y2 teacher and I don't expect that they will come to me knowing the months of the year. It's on our mental maths planners - so more than likely they will be taught in Y2 - don't worry!

My 5 year old hasn't got a clue.

This is a nice poem to help them with the order and characters of the months. It's a bit old-fashioned but my grannie taught it to my mum, who taught it to me and now I'm teaching it to my DCs.
