How to practice combo sounds: *a,ai,ay,ee,ea,ie,igh,ou,ow*, DD y2 in septembre

DD started on combo sounds recently, I was wondering how to practice these during summer holidays, she is OK with a, ai, ay and ee, ea, but is puzzled with igh and ir, ur, any teachers out there please suggestions.

DD Y1 not Y2 sorry

Practice them any way you want to.

Here are some flash cards with word lists if that's your thing......

There are letters and sounds online games (just google letters and sounds) or if you want to print things out tpet and twinkl have nice stuff.

Is it the requirement that DD knows all of them before entering Y1? or they will be going over them during the course of Y1?
She is OK with reading them and recognising them in a sentence, but when she does writing she gets confused with some of them( ir bird, girl) (ur turn or turnip)
Also when we do sentences writing is it a good idea to exaggerate these combo sounds to help her hear them? thanks

No, she doesn't need to know them before entering Y1.

They should still be doing phonics every day during Y1 and Y2.

So you don't have to do any work with her at all over the Summer. She sounds like she's doing very well for the end of reception.

You would expect a 6 year old to confuse 'ir' and 'ur' when writing!

She sounds like she is at the right stage, she knows that there are alternative spellings for some sounds but just mixes some up! Pretty normal at her age I would say. It's a hard language we have!! In Y2 she will move onto support for spelling (don't know alot about it) but I think that teaches them more rules of spelling and when to use which spelling.

Thanks, DesolationAngel it's good to know it's not all down to me to teach her and yes very hard language, DD is bilingual and I want her to do well in English as well as in her mother tongue, she is trying her best, but numeracy is a whole different bucket of send, she sucks at simple sums, any tips to help her with that?

I think your expectations of a child who has just left reception might be too high.

I think you should relax.

Is the teacher pleased with her progress? Is her report full of things to indicate she is doing well?

Teacher is pleased and I am very pleased, but DH is very proud (*that's my girl).
I will try and relax, report is full of: very good , good, extremly impressed, intelligent questions and remarks by DD.
I know what you mean IndigoBell yes i need to relax, I work hard with her
and perhaps it is not needed at this stage, I can be a task master and I should ease of.
I want us to have fun this coming summer and less work.

Don't do anything formal.

You can hide earning though - casually round the shops for example...

Counting fruit/veg into bags...
Working out how many of something you need

Junior monopoly is also v v good fun way to start doing sums, or any dice game with 2 dice can be used for simple addition.

But honestly don't need to do any more.

I have home made phonics cards and 'tricky' high frequency words that I have made for Dd as she has encountered them through reception. I intend to get them out once a week just so she doesn't forget them - but nothing more and I won't be teaching her anything 'new'

i think they need to be able to read the common ones at the end of reception. if she is reading more than one way of writing a phoneme, she is doingell. I think they work(used to work) on introducing more than one way of writing sounds in year one. there is no harm in making up games to play with these sounds.

the best way of teaching simple sums is with food as you get to eat it too. one raisin and 2 more raisins makes...

look out for ways of using maths when she is playing, following her lead. eg

"look mummy, I have got a cup of tea for dolly"

"oo yes. teddy and rabbit want to come too, how many cups of tea do we need now? "

ah yes, one for dolly and 2 more for teddy and rabbit that makes 3 cups of tea"

don't do it too much though or it gets no fun. supply the answer if dc is stuck.

It's been a while since I have been in school, you can tell.
So really none of the old Soviet system of teaching sums(2+4=), but rather fun applicable maths that she can relate to; role play and dice games sounds fun.
Yes, all the common words DD and her classmates are expected to know, but at the beginning of summer term DD was sent home special writing books with those combo sounds, I was a little bit confused and at the time I was thinking this is too hard.
As I said I will try to do as little as possible with flashcards IndigoBell suggested, not too much.

I thought she was going into Y2!!
She's just going into Y1 she's doing fantastic!!

The vowel phonemes I used this rhyme with DS 'when 2 vowels go a walking, the first one does the talking'. eg ee, ie

But hes about to leave yr 2 and go to juniors and doesn't always remember them all.

Don't worry to much they don't always teach them until year 1.

I guess I was panicking a little when I saw this new book and did wonder how to go about it.
Also I did wonder as why has it been sent so late in the year?
That is why I came to conclusion that perhaps I will have to do it with DD over holidays.
