what level should a child at the end of recpetion?

Hi I am trying to understand how far behind my little boys is in his reading, writing and maths at reception.

He suffered from glue ear and has taken his time in all subjects and is still quite behind and I wanted to understand what the benchmark is?

I helped in my dd's reception class last year, and the levels at the end of the year ranged hugely. I know it doesn't really help you to tell you that, but honestly it's the truth! Reading levels are possibly the easiest marker - last year the children finished ranging from pink band to purple (roughly ORT 1-8). Most were on yellow, blue or green (3,4,5 ish). There were children who couldn't count the spots on dice and children who could add up two digit numbers in their heads - most were somewhere in between.

hi I teach reception and like runoutofideas says abilities vary very widely. but as a very rough guide I would say that I would hope that most children could do the following by the end of year r . . .

writing - write name , spell cvc words confidently, write a few words eg mum daddy the to and from memory and write a simple phrase with help eg the red cat to accompany a picture.

reading - recognise own name and names of friends as well as some common words from memory as above, read cvc words confidently, read simple texts with revocable words.

maths - recognise, read, order and write numbers to ten. name common shapes and make a simple pattern, and do simple adding and subtracting with objects understanding the concept of more and less.

some of mine do far more than this, some less. have you spoken to his teacher about your concerns? the most important thing is that he has progressed from. where he was at the beginning of the year.
