Just wondering what SAT papers are normally done in year 2. DD said she did 3 maths tests this week. Is that likely to be SATs?

Yes. DD1 is shattered, it's been five long days plus daily rehearsals for the school play next week. So glad they break up soon.

mrz · 20/05/2011 21:01

No it's not the SATs there is only one maths test

haribo80 · 20/05/2011 21:05

Thank you MRz. It seemed odd. She said today that the other children only had one paper and said had two yesterday.

There is a level 2 paper and a level 3 paper but children should only do one.

letthembe · 20/05/2011 21:10

In some schools, those with greater target pressure for KS1 results, may do more practice tests and then children who perform well on the Level 2 test, they might then do the level 3 paper. I think some heads will be proactive/thinking ahead, if CVA is on the way out, KS1 results will go back to having greater importance. But I have to say it's all a political game.

haribo80 · 20/05/2011 22:00

Thank you. That makes sense.

KS1 'results' are not based on the SAT paper. The teacher should be continuously assessing each child and should report his/her assessment at the end of the year. This may, or may not, be the level achieved in the test.

We had a county KS1 moderation this morning for maths/reading. She was very pleased that we hadn't done any practice papers at all. If a child is working at L3 in class, then they should do the L3 paper. If they are workign at L2, they should do the L2 paper. A teacher should have no problem deciding which one to give them, as s/he should ALWAYS be aware of the level they are working at.

What you are saying letthembe is bad practice.

letthembe · 20/05/2011 22:10

All teachers should be continually assessing, no matter what year the group. I am just thinking ahead, CVA is on the way out, how are schools going to make their results/progress standard.

I am becoming more and more disillusioned by testing and levelling...it's all a political game. My own daughter is probably going to be assessed as a 2a in reading but has recently read and understood Charlotte's Web. She adores reading and devours books, I think this is far more important than 2a or 3. SATs mean more to schools than the children.

letthembe · 20/05/2011 22:11

Whoops, too much Friday night special juice...stand out (not standard),

mrz · 20/05/2011 22:15

SATs mean more to parents and Ofsted than to schools Hmm

gordongrumblebum · 20/05/2011 22:18

The SATs will only act as a support to the teacher's assessment of your daughter at 2A. These Y2 SATs tests really have lost significance.

We are betting on single level tests like they have in Scotland, to take as you become ready.

letthembe · 20/05/2011 22:18

Oh god I agree with that mrz!! How can we revolutionise the system?

amidaiwish · 20/05/2011 22:20

in our schools they are doing 2 of each paper
2 x spellings
2 x numeracy
2 x comprehension
the understanding i have (from DD) is that they all do level 2 and then some do level 3 and some do level 1. she might not have that right though, but she has definitely done 5 already and has 1 more on monday.
the papers she has done have all said "2009" which i think is the last year the govt produced the tests?

gordongrumblebum · 20/05/2011 22:22

Her teachers haven't read the guidelines ami Smile

amidaiwish · 20/05/2011 22:25

ha ha...
tbh dd1 seems to have enjoyed them, the going out in small groups, the sweets when they've finished, the whole theatre of it. certainly not fazed or stressed by them.

letthembe · 20/05/2011 22:26

Definitely not following the instructions but I know a few schools that also test with the level 2 paper and then the level 3. Naughty but true.

gordongrumblebum · 20/05/2011 22:29

But why? What's the point if the assessment's being made on the child's work? I don't get it!

mrz · 20/05/2011 22:32

i confess I didn't give some of my L3 readers the level 3 test because I knew that it would freak them out

amidaiwish · 20/05/2011 22:33

i'm quite pleased they have the tests - DD would be given a 3 on her daily work, but it would be good to know if she performs well on a test. i know they're only 7 but if she goes for selective/independent secondary schools I don't want to find out at 11 that she underperforms on a test. now i sound like a loon......

letthembe · 20/05/2011 22:44

Schools aspiring to be outstanding need to prove that attainment and progress is above national expectancy. Hence the need for level 3 in Y2, so KS1 SATs are still very important otherwise they would have been stopped completely.

They you have ensure 2 sub levels progress EVERY year to get more than 2 levels progress in KS2. Outstanding progress in OfSTED terms!!

Oh and I don't care if my DD is 2c, 2b, 2a or 3 - she loves reading, writing and school (not so much maths). It's about long term goals!!

gordongrumblebum · 20/05/2011 22:52

They are an assessment tool.
The teacher will assess the levels based on work. Progress is measured from this teacher assessment.
That is the KS1 baseline, not the tests.

I agree - bloody ridiculous progress measure - bias to EAL schools with good teachers.

letthembe · 21/05/2011 09:46

If it's only an assessment tool, why do so many schools use them so religiously?

AbigailS · 21/05/2011 09:54

Some schools use them so religiously because we are told we have to use them in a certain way. Also many people refuse to trust teacher assessments Angry and only believe test scores.

mrz · 21/05/2011 10:18

letthembe, perhaps because the law says we have to use them Hmm

haribo80 · 21/05/2011 15:35

So do the test papers really mean much? Do teachers's use them to help get a score or do they continually assess based on classwork. If she took a level 3 paper and performed badly would she be assessed as a level 2. (a b or c)Its all very confusing.
