Moving from Spain to London with 2 kids, where to start

A good friend is coming (work related) to London from September 2011 to June 2012. She is a single mother of two kids (approx. 10 and 8 years old). Could you please help me help her? She needs to get her kids in school, and I have no idea how to go about it at this point of the year when the admission process is closed. Any ideas?
Thank you

The process is still exactly the same. She needs to apply through the local council for any schools she wants. The council will allocate places for the children but they may not be at the preferred schools. If she is unhappy with the schools allocated she can appeal. Note that the council will probably want firm evidence that she is moving into the area before they will accept an application.

Thank you very much GiddyPickle. I guess than after that, all will depend on availability of places. She will be working for a University in central London. Any idea of what can be a good bet?
