Who is expected to make this gas mask box DD has for her homework? Me or DD?

Because I can't see DD(9) drawing out a template and cutting it out. Hmm So I suppose I'm expected to do that, so DD can take it into school and wear it. Would it be very wrong to buy one off eBay for a fiver??

why cant she draw it out? I would have thought an average 9 year old could do that - maybe some help with cutting if it's really tough card and checking measurements maybe.

Why can't she draw the template and cut it out? It's her homework so presumably the teacher expects her to do it. It would seem a bit odd otherwise. Have they given her somehting to copy or is it to be more freelance?

LovelyDaffs · 15/05/2011 16:28

Why? Dd2 is 9 and would love that for homework.

roadkillbunny · 15/05/2011 16:32

Why ever not? Drawing out the template and building it into the 3D box is a very important maths activity, unless your dd has some SEN that would make cutting out difficult I fail to see why a 9 year old would struggle, my not quite 6 year old could do the cutting out for that!

My 10 year old has just drawn a remplate , cut out and made a pyramid without help - so I'm sure a 9 year old could make a box!

At 9, they will have done nets in numeracy I'd have thought.

She can draw it, cut it out and then attached ribbon/string through holes in the side surely?

Dd2 was very into WW2 back in Yr1. She made her own gas mask box which she carried round with her for most of one holiday... and had an evacuee luggage label on her coat that made the old ladies coo over her.

chicaguapa · 15/05/2011 22:25

Maybe she could then. If you think she'll have done nets at school, she should be able to copy out a template okay. She'll be ok with cutting. Hurrah! Thanks.
