OK, another reading question, in a roundabout kind of way

Can I just ask what happens at your DC's schools re: moving up to the next book band? Is it a case of the child reading all of one level and simply moving up, or are they re-assessed by a teacher before this can happen? Thanks.

I move children up (and down) levels based on how well they are reading day in and day out in the classroom.

At my DD's school this just seems to happen easily. Once I questioned the level of the book she had, and her Y1 teacher said that she could choose from a higher shelf if she wanted to (she did officially move her up a level as well I think).

At my DD's school they have to read all the books in one level before they can progress to the next.

in my DD class they read all books in the level (usually 18) before moving onto the next - this seems to work well for my DD and the right pace. She started reading on stage 2 in oct/nov and is mid stage 4 so read 50 books approx. She was ready for stage 4 weeks ago i think but i suppose if you move them too quickly it may dishearten them if they struggle.

At Ds1's school you move up when you are ready to (as assessed by his teacher). So for some bands he has read most of the books and for others maybe a dozen - it just depends on how fast his reading/comprehension is coming on at any given time.

At my DC's school you usually read all of the books in a level before moving up. There are exceptions though, DS2 was once moved up from Level 3 ORT to Level 9 after being assessed.

In DD's reception class there are boxes with books of a similar level in and children/parents can change them when they want. They get changed in class as well. Sometimes I have said I felt she could move up a box, sometimes her teacher has. There is definitely no insistence on reading all the books in a certain level before moving up.

I think the teacher assesses to see if they are ready but there are many things they look for. I'm not sure what age you are talking about but I've got a reception child who reads at a totally different level depending on the style of book. For example he'll read the old ORT books about level 5 with pretty good fluency (not loads of expression) but is slow with Songbirds level 3.
