Well we have tried, breaking the words into the sounds and saying them differently to help him hear the sounds. Played hangman where he told me the letters and I put them in the word, then we reversed it and I gave in the letters and he had to put them in the word. I also have them written on paper and blue tacked in his bedroom and downstairs, and also the repeated writing/copying of the words.

He has also been doing the Sats this week so trying not to put to much pressure on him for the test as well.

DeWe I think it is concentration a lot of the time with DS as well. This week with his sats he has been very tired so it has been a battle getting him to work on his spellings so fingers crossed for tomorrow. We also found that the words he got right all week he would get wrong in the test.

DH has promised him 50p for each word he gets the right for his holiday. Hoping this will work.

DH has promised him 50p for each word he gets the right for his holiday This will add extra stress. Depends on his personality as to whether that is a good approach or not....

But I really, really wouldn't use this approach.

Because it doesn't matter how many spelling words he get's right in a one off test. What you are trying to do is improve his spelling in his written work....

IndigoBell, this approach has worked in the past. He has the tests every week and the marks go on his record.

He didn't have the test again this week because of the Sats, which is good, but I wish they told us this at the beg of the week. Same words for next week.

4 out of 6 right, a definite improvement. He got his money. We relaxed on the practise, just the night before. Having a week off now and then a more relaxed practise.
