Can you go on the waiting list of a school you didn't apply for?

Due to a rather long and complicated set of circumstances we applied to an out of area school for DS2 which he will get a place at as DS1 is there, I can explain all the whys and wherefores if necessary but it might just muddy the waters!

We are in Surrey and get our allocations next Monday, things have changed now and the out of area school will not be appropriate after the Reception year for DS2 as DS1 will move on. Can I ask to go on the waiting lists for our local schools from Monday even though I didn't apply to them originally? They are both very oversubscribed but the change is necessary because of DS1s SN. We have not especailly close to either of them and would not necessarily get into either of them if we had applied in the normal way.

I hope this makes sense - I'm trying to keep it simple but I'm not sure that's helping!

You can in my area. But you have to put in a new application. Do it straight away, and you may get lucky.

Oh great - thanks! Thinkingkindly - when you say straight away do you mean now, before the allocations are out?

Ring the local authority

You are entitled to go on the waiting list of any school at any time and, indeed, to appeal for any school if you are refused admission. That right applies wherever you live in England.
